Emergency Medical Services personnel are being honored as part of the national EMS Week celebrations, a recognition first proclaimed by President Gerald Ford in 1974.

The Newton Fire Department is the sole provider of EMS services in Newton, a division of the fire department dating back to 1962.

EMS workers provide the necessary patient assessment and critical care decisions in emergency responses. They perform rapid scene assessments, triage, treatment and transports. Local department members are trained to the American Heart Association Health Care Provider level and provide basic life support, advance life support, critical care transport and routine and emergency transfers.

The Newton Fire Department uses a fully integrated system utilizing dual-role firefighters in the delivery of fire and emergency services. Each firefighter is certified to a minimum level of Emergency Medical Paramedic. Each crew is staffed with a minimum of five Iowa Paramedic Specialists and five of the department's Paramedic Specialists are Critical Care Transport endorsed.

Expensive cars
It may look natural for expensive cars to be costly in terms of insurance. But it has nothing to do with their initial price as there are other reasons to charge higher rates for such vehicles. Franchising will take Manhattan

This year, the International Franchise Expo (IFE) moves to a new home in New York City and promises to be bigger than ever, drawing in a huge audience of movers and shakers in the worldwide franchise industry, and those looking to be part of it.

From June 15 to 17, franchises will be able to exhibit their concepts to thousands of prospective investors and franchise owners. People looking to do business locally in New York, nationally and internationally will all be at the exhibition, and this year, the IFE is doing something different, opening the show to any company without restriction.

This year, franchisors have the opportunity to apply for Trade Show Exemption status, allowing them to do business at the exhibition.

This fee-based exemption, provided by the NY State Attorney General, has never been done before and it opens up the exhibition doors to a whole new group of franchised businesses.

The exemption means franchisors can exhibit at the IFE without formal registration with the state of New York and promote their opportunity on the exhibition floor during trade show hours. However, actual sales agreements must take place after the company has registered.

Ultimate goal
International expansion is the ultimate goal for every franchise, and it is only a matter of time until every concept moves in that direction. Franchising internationally can be tricky, and exhibitions provide a perfect venue for making connections and building the relationships to do so.

Having an exemption for franchisors at an exhibition that takes place in the USA?s business capital translates to a huge opportunity for businesses looking to take that next step. Many franchisors have already taken advantage of the simple application process that will allow them to make those connections at the show. Visitors from more than 40 countries will be taking advantage of what the IFE has to offer.

The exhibition floor is selling out ? something that hasn?t happened in 21 years. The show has already outgrown its allotted space, requiring adjacent space to be added.

Plenty of dedicated franchises will be coming back to take advantage of everything the show has to offer, in addition to nearly 100 newcomers, and counting. The international exemption programme is making this all possible, and is directly responsible for new companies exhibiting the IFE.

?The exemption opportunity is making the show much more significant this year,? says Jim Mastandrea, Group Show Director of MFV Expositions, the company responsible for organising the IFE. ?We?ve always had a great turnout at the IFE, but this year we?ve really gone all out. We are making sure that the attendees will have every opportunity at their disposal to make connections locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.?

The IFE offers something for everyone. Franchisors attend exhibitions like this to showcase their concept to hundreds of potential investors, arriving armed with a franchise development team ready to make an impression and generate leads and sales.

Ray Titus, President of United Franchise Group, says lead generation at an exhibition is one of the main concerns for brands that are exhibiting.

?All leads are quality leads,? continues Ray. ?Anybody who wants to find out more about our company is a potential prospect, or a potential employee or a potential customer. We?re not necessarily offering franchises here, we?re building a brand.?

Franchise owners attend exhibitions to continue to involve themselves fully in the industry and stay on top of what?s new and hot. Many businesses will be exhibiting to explore the idea of selling multi-units, in order to see what else the industry has to offer.

Budding entrepreneurs
The IFE will also open its doors to those who have an interest in franchising ? ready to decide if it?s the right fit and what concept will launch them into entrepreneurship.

Explaining his objective when meeting new people at exhibitions, Ted Looney, Vice President of Jani-King Franchising, says: ?Our goal is to welcome every single visitor and provide them with the information to make a good, educated decision.?

Kevin Derella, Executive Vice President of Coverall Health Systems, believes that it?s all about the visitor.

?When talking to potential franchise owners, we want to find out if franchising is right for them,? 4 dead after boat crash on Iowa river

The bodies of four people missing after a boat crash on the Mississippi River in Iowa were found Sunday within 100 yards of the crash site, according to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. None were wearing a life vest.

DNR officer Paul Kay said the victims were three men and a woman, all believed to be in their 20s. Their names have not been released, pending notification of their families.

Along with the four killed, eight people were injured when two jon boats ? flat-bottomed boats often made of aluminum ? crashed in the O'Connell Slough area of the river, where the water is 10 to 12 feet deep, before 2 a.m. Saturday. One of the boats was carrying 11 people; the other had a single passenger.

Authorities scoured the river near Burlington for signs of the missing boaters Saturday before calling off the search after dark. Efforts resumed early Sunday morning.

DNR spokesman Kevin Baskins said eight people were pulled from the water soon after the crash. At least one person suffered serious injuries and was flown to an Iowa City hospital, he said. The others were taken to a Burlington hospital.

Burlington is in southeast Iowa on the Illinois border, about 200 miles north of St. Louis on the river.

JPMorgan trading losses likely growing

JPMorgan Chase has acknowledged losing at least $2 billion on a series of risky trades, and now that sea of red ink appears to be rising.

According to the New York Times Dealbook, which cited anonymous insiders, Chase has already lost at least another $1 billion since bank CEO Jamie Dimon disclosed what he described as a "flawed" hedging strategy a week ago.

Chief investment officer Ina Drew already has resigned over the losses, and the bank reportedly has dimissed the main trader responsible for executive the strategy, dubbed the "London Whale" in financial markets. Now sharks are moving in to take advantage of the bank's vulnerability.

?This is a very hard trade to get out of because it?s so big," an?anonymous trader told the Times.

JPMorgan shares, which have shed nearly 20 percent of their value since the losses were disclosed, were down 3 percent at $34.40 Thursday.?

Some lawmakers and other industry observers have questioned whether the trades were truly "hedges" intended to protect the bank from risk or were simply risky bets intended to?make a?profit.

Banks regularly hedge against risk by making both positive and negative trades on the same products so that a loss on one side will be offset by a gain on the other. In theory, the timing overlaps so the hedge protects the value of the original position only while the bank holds that position.

In the case of the trades that led to Chase's multibillion dollar loss, the timing was skewed, with the different positions of a three-layer bet covering different time periods, according to the Wall Street Journal. The trades were also made on different indexes that don't track each other, an unusual decision that increases risk ? but also provides the opportunity to make a profit.

High school girls' golf: swings ahead of Aberdeen Central

Pierre placed three golfers among the top nine to win the team title at the Golden Eagle Invitational with a 334.

The host team, Aberdeen Central, finished just two strokes back at 336 on Tuesday at the meet at Lee Park Golf Course in Aberdeen. The Golden Eagles had four golfers shoot the exact same score. Ashley Rook, Brianna Kuckelburg, Kayla Krueger and Amanda Tobin topped Central with identical 84s.

?It shows how balanced we are from top to bottom,? said Central girls' golf coach Kim Zimmerman. ?Some teams rely on one or two players to go low for them. Our team is made up of girls that might shoot in the 70s occasionally, but not consistently. We have to go out and put four good scores on the board.?

The medalist was Halliee Pieper of Watertown with a 75, followed by Hallie Getz of Pierre with a 77.

?It wasn't a huge meet or a big invitational, but it had quality teams and quality individuals. We hadn't competed for a week, so it was good to get out and play,? said Zimmerman.

The last meet for the Golden Eagles was the Eastern South Dakota Conference meet.

?I thought we regrouped real well after a disappointing ESD in Watertown,? said Zimmerman. ?It was good to get back on course and play on a nice day. Plus, it's not like we have a lot of home events, so it's nice to play on your home course.?

Germany's Pirate Party rides wave of popularity

MAINZ, Germany -- The Pirate Party boarded another ship this week, so to speak, as the upstarts'?voyage into German politics startled mainstream rivals.

Their treasure? Nearly 8 percent?of the votes in a local election in?the country's?most populous state and their fourth consecutive entry into a German local state parliament.

"We have written history today, now it is time to party, politics should be fun," said Michele Marsching, head of the local state chapter in?Northrhein-Westphalia.?

The Pirate Party has based its political agenda mainly on Internet freedom and political transparency. It promotes what it calls "liquid feedback," which involves members making suggestions online. They?are discussed in chat rooms before entering the party's?internal policy-making process.

Despite, or?perhaps?because of this unconventional approach, the Pirate Party surprised the country's long-established parties by gaining a reputable 7.8 percent of the vote on Sunday. Meanwhile, Chancellor Angela Merkel's party ? the Christian Democrats ? had to cope with a huge defeat in Northrhein-Westphalia.

'Learning by doing'
But who are the Pirates? A mostly young motley crew of?hip intellectuals and bandana-wearing cyber-politicians, they have openly admitted that they are still "learning by doing"?after every new election success.

The Pirates emerged in Sweden six years ago, where they started by campaigning on free downloads for personal use and Internet privacy issues. Germany's Pirate Party now has approximately 30,000 members.

"The party consists of mostly liberal leftists, who have some typical socialist views. But most important is that they promote a new form of politics," Professor J?rgen Falter, a political scientist at the University of Mainz, told NBC News.

Falter says that he has spent hours combing through the Pirates' program, but admits that he had difficulties finding a clear political line in their manifesto.

"Some of the propositions would even require a fundamental change of German laws and a total rethinking of existing party oligarchies," Falter said.

A retired teacher's courageous crusade: Tackling neo-Nazi hate

In fact, some political demands seem rather anarchical: the Pirates are calling for ticket-free public transportation in German cities, funded (as one of many online proposals?suggested by?members) by tax money. Another demand is the basic income guarantee for all Germans.

However, the party still has difficulties explaining how these projects would be paid for.

'No defined finish line'
What happens, for example, if a foreign tourist needs a bus ticket? No answer yet -- decision-making in progress, the Pirates say.

"Political experts always ask when we are ready to present our program, when we can define all of our goals," says 31-year-old Markus Barenhoff, the deputy chairman of the Pirate Party. "But for us, there is no defined finish line, politics and political decisions are a continuing development process."

Germany's influential Der Spiegel weekly news magazine recently dedicated its cover to Germany's?fledgling party and described the young politicians as "amateurs," calling the Pirates' political quest a "grand experiment."

Der Spiegel's article portrayed the Pirates as?"a party of computer nerds and freaks, a party of political neophytes, electrifying a large share of German citizens."

The Pirates' popularity seems to be the result of a growing political mistrust and disappointment with traditional politicians.

Many analysts in Germany say the Pirates are drawing support from across the political spectrum due to a growing "disenchantment with politics" across Europe.

"Thanks to their fresh anti-establishment attitude they are attracting many new voters, who in the past stayed away from the polls," Falter added. "But they also capture the so-called protest votes, people who are frustrated with conventional politics.

"The Pirates are somewhat naive politicians, but they are democrats, and their success is far better than seeing gains for extremist parties from the Far Left or the Far Right."

The Pirates' fairytale is reminiscent of the?rise of Germany's Green party, which was regarded as?little more than?a group of radical ecologists when?the party?appeared?on the political landscape 30 years ago. Today, the Greens are a respected "political pillar" and have been part of ruling coalitions.

But while the Greens had a clear political message from the start, the Pirates are still in search of their exact stand on important issues such as the eurozone crisis or defense and security policies.

"We are truly different," says Barenhoff, an IT specialist. "Our focus is set more on political methods than on political content."

If the Pirates do manage to become a permanent player in German parliaments, they?could make it tougher for?the country's?large parties to form majorities. A?federal?election looms in September 2013.?

The Pirates?are cautious about whether their current success is sustainable and if it will allow them to gain seats in the Bundestag, Germany's lower house of parliament, next year.

"I believe that we have very good chances to enter the German parliament in 2013, but knowing how rapid things can change in politics, I do not want to give a prognosis for the long term," says Barenhoff. "We are working on the here and now."

TiVo Spring update brings new Netflix and YouTube experience

As promised at CES earlier this year, TiVo has released its Spring update with the anticipated new Netflix and YouTube apps, as well as porting parental control options to the Premiere's HD user interface. Netflix is the most intriguing of the additions, but while TiVo Premiere owners can now watch Netflix 1080p programming with Dolby Digital Plus discrete surround sound, like Hulu Plus, it isn't a TiVo experience. The new Google-built YouTube app is also like any other streamer and with the exception of search, there isn't much integration at all. Parental control options can finally be set when using the HD UI, but still isn't as full featured as it was with the old UI and is a far cry from KidZone. What the update doesn't do yet however, is complete the HD interface transformation that some Premiere owners have been waiting two years for. Still, we suspect that caveat won't stop owners from rolling the dice on an update check for their TiVo every day over the next few weeks.

HP unveils Envy Spectre XT Ultrabook, other thin-and-lights in various sizes

What's that? You're hungry for more HP laptops? Good! Because we're not nearly done yet! The company just expanded its line of Ultrabooks from two to five, and that's not even counting this guy. And, the company also plans to sell so-called Sleekbooks -- essentially, thin-and-light laptops that don't quite meet Intel's criteria for Ultrabooks. So what goodies to we have in store? First up, there's the 13.3-inch Envy Spectre XT, whose all-metal body looks nothing like the glass-class clad Envy 14 Spectre we reviewed earlier this year. As with its big brother, the major selling point here is design -- in this case, a 3.07-pound machine with a 14.5mm-thick profile. As for specs, you can expect an Ivy Bridge CPU, paired with a 128GB SSD and a battery rated for eight hours of runtime. Like the other Ultrabooks in HP's stable, it makes room for a USB 3.0 port, HDMI and an Ethernet jack, and similar to other Envys it comes with full copies of Adobe Premiere Elements and Photoshop Elements, along with a two-year subscription to Norton Internet Security. We're told the warranty on this Envy is one year, not two, but users owners do get a dedicated customer support line, for what that's worth.

Moving on, HP's Envy-branded Ultrabooks and "Sleekbooks" will be available in 14- and and 15.6-inch screen sizes in each category, though the Ultrabook configs are naturally Intel-based, while the Sleekbooks will pack Intel or AMD chips. With the Sleekbooks, too, you can also choose optional discrete graphics if there's an Intel processor inside. (The AMD versions have "discrete-class" graphics, which is really just a nod to the all-inclusive design of AMD's application processing units.) If you go for the Sleekbook, you'll also get up to nine hours of battery life; with the Intel-based Ultrabooks, that rating is eight or nine hours, depending on whether you opt for the 14- or 15-inch version. Of course, the Intel-based models are also home to various Intel-branded technologies, including Rapid Start, Identity Protection, Smart Response and Smart Connect.

One thing that won't change is the industrial design: both the Ultrabooks and Sleekbooks will be offered in black and red. Both Ultrabooks are available today, starting at $750 for the 14-inch model and $800 for the 15-incher. The 14-inch Sleekbook is on sale today, too, starting at $700, though the 15-inch version doesn't debut until June 20th, at which point it'll start at $600. As for that Spectre XT, it'll start at $1,000 and is expected to land June 8th. Until then, we've got a mix of photos, along with starting specs after the break.
