Anti-Aging Choices and Decisions - Fitness After 40

By Donovan Baldwin

I am sure that most of us realize that in many parts of our lives, including the part where we grow older and begin to notice it, there are things over which we have control things over which we have only some control, and those over which we have no control at all.

Looking back over our lives from that time called "old age", we see many spots where our money, our careers, our relationships were changed by things that happened...or could have been changed by those that didn't. While many of these just happened, I once lost a dream job because of a typographical error in a government document, many changes were the result of choices we made. Maybe even most changes.

Choices are both the ultimate outcomes, and instigators of decisions. We don't always have control of all aspect of the choices available to us, but we do have control over the decisions. Which choice decide on, however, is ours and is often selected without consideration for the ultimate outcomes.

In his book, "7 Habits of Highly Effective People", Stephen Covey puts being proactive at the start of the list.

This is true in many aspects of life whether you are talking about getting into the "right" university, making your first million before age 40, or eventually retiring at a resonable age in good health and with a comfortable income.

Even though making the right decisions ahead of time is probably the best strategy for a long and healthy life, deciding to make those decisions even after you are in your older years can still be effective in increasing your odds of living longer and enjoying it more. You can slow down and even perhaps reverse the aging process.

So, when it comes to the choices you might face, what sorts of anti-aging decisions might be availble to you? Keep in mind, by the way, that while many of the decisions may be based on desires and intentions linked to age, many of the choices are the same ones faced by twenty-year-olds, forty-year-olds, and sixty-year-olds.

What should I eat?

What about exercise?

How much sleep should I get?

Here's the good news: Most of the decisions you make about your health and life in your 60's are pretty much the same as the ones you should have been making in your 40's. Still, the sooner you begin making them, the more they will affect your life in the future.

Think of it like investing. If you can begin putting aside a given amount of money on a regular schedule in your 20's, you will have a lot more money in your 60's than the person who did not begin putting aside the same amount until their 40's.

Even so, when it comes to health and longevity, beginning late in life is better than not beginning at all.

So, what decisions should you make?

Nutrition
Do not diet. Avoid sugar, products containing sugar, and foods containing empty carbs. Eat foods high in fiber. Keep an eye on calories. Make sure you have good sources of protein in your diet.

Here's a recommendation, by the way: Go to the library or book store and learn a bit about the glycemic index. It's a great way to manage weight and improve health without going on some nutty diet.

Exercise
Don't over do. Especially as you age, it becomes easier to injure yourself or just plain get fed up if you try to do too much too soon. While your goal is about 30 minutes of physical activity just about every day, you don't have to do all of that at first. Build up to it. Find different activities that help you get the amount of activity you need. Find at least a few that you really enjoy doing.
Supplements
Really, the only supplement you should need will be a daily multivitamin. While experts will tell you that you can get all the vitamins and minerals you need from a well-balanced diet, how many people do you know who actually eat that way. Also, as we age, our bodies find it harder to access and use the nutrients available in the food we eat, and, for various reasons, we tend to get a little sloppy in our eating habits and schedules.

Sleep
The old recommendation of eight hours a night has been proven a good one by recent research. As we age, sleep gets broken up and we may need a little extra sack time.

Friends and Family
Stay connected. Many people who end up in poor health or sitting in a rocking chair in the corner muttering to themselves get there just because they are not linked up to enough people. Connections keep us in the real world.

Mental Activity
Keeping your brain active is just about as important as an anti-aging strategy as physical activity. Challenging your brain with puzzles is just one way to keep it "young". Learning new skills are an excellent way to keep the brain cells firing on all, or at least most, cylinders. Take a trip. It has been shown that visiting new places, experiencing new customs and activities, learning new languages, and even reading the map can help the brain resist the aging process.

Those are just a short list of the anti-aging decisions you can make. There are many more, more than can be covered in a short article like this one. Go do some research on your own...even that will help keep your brain and body younger.

Canada condo prices to rise across country: Genworth | Real Estate ...

TORONTO ? A new condo report suggests first-time buyers, retirees and population growth will continue to fuel demand and price growth for the compact living spaces over the next few years.

The study by Genworth Canada found that average condo resale prices are expected to rise next year in seven of the eight metropolitan centres studied.

Prices in Toronto are projected to jump 2.5% to $312,352.

For those seeking to own a home affordably in urban centres, condos remain a good option

The highest increase however, is expected to be in Edmonton where prices could rise 3.2%.

Vancouver is the only city where condo prices are expected to drop, by 2% to $348,152.

The report stands in contrast to warnings from economists and officials that the condo market in some hot markets is reaching bubble territory that could soon burst.

The Bank of Canada and federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty have cautioned Canadians repeatedly to moderate borrowing on real estate, declaring household debt to be the domestic economy?s number one enemy.

The central bank noted certain segments of the housing market that have a persistent oversupply ? such as condos in Toronto ? face a higher risk of a price correction.

Genworth ? which earns revenue from selling mortgage insurance ? notes that rising prices for single-detached homes are driving first-time buyers to condos, but retirees also continue to prop up demand.

It suggests that the population is expected to grow in all eight cities studied over the next few years, while employment growth and low interest rates should also support the market.

?This data corroborates our view that the demand for condos in Canada, particularly at the price-point we insure, is well supported by our economy and our population,? said Brian Hurley, chairman and CEO of Genworth Canada.

?For those seeking to own a home affordably in urban centres, condos remain a good option.?

The Genworth Canada report, produced with the Conference Board of Canada, reviewed trends in
Quebec City, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Victoria.

Census figures for 2011 released in February show multi-unit dwellings ? a category that includes condominiums ? making up roughly half of all new housing stock, a category traditionally led by detached homes.

The numbers also indicate that Canadians are flocking to urban centres. Toronto?s population jumped more than 17% over the previous census period in 2006.

A recent CMHC report said housing starts and home sales have been strong in 2012 ? particularly when it comes to multiple-dwelling units such as townhouses, condos and apartments ? but will soften moderately in coming months into 2013.

Aspirin-clopidogrel no better than aspirin alone for patients with lacunar stroke, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Aspirin combined with the antiplatelet drug clopidogrel is no better than aspirin alone for stroke prevention in people with a history of lacunar strokes, and the combination carries a greater risk of gastrointestinal bleeding, according to results of a trial funded by the National Institutes of Health. Lacunar strokes occur due to chronic high blood pressure and typically produce small lesions deep within the brain.

The trial results also point to an overall improvement in stroke management during the past decade. Regardless of whether patients received aspirin alone or the dual therapy, their stroke risk was reduced more than three-fold from what it was 10 years ago.

Antiplatelet drugs such as aspirin are routinely prescribed to help prevent new strokes in people with a history of lacunar stroke. The Secondary Prevention of Small Subcortical Strokes (SPS3) trial was designed to determine if adding clopidogrel to aspirin would offer better protection than aspirin alone. The results appear in the Aug. 30th New England Journal of Medicine.* They show that the aspirin-clopidogrel combination was about equal to aspirin in reducing the risk of any type of stroke, but it almost doubled the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding.

"For all stroke therapeutics, there is a need to balance the potential benefits against the risks. The SPS3 findings establish that for lacunar stroke, dual therapy with aspirin and clopidogrel carries significant risk and minimal benefit," said Walter Koroshetz, M.D., deputy director of National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), part of the National Institutes of Health.

The SPS3 trial is funded by NINDS and led by Oscar R. Benavente, M.D., research director of the Stroke and Cerebrovascular Health program at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, British Columbia.

In addition to comparing dual antiplatelet therapy with aspirin, the trial was designed to test two levels of blood pressure control. After an interim data analysis in August 2011, the antiplatelet component of the trial was stopped. NIH also issued a clinical alert, warning that there was "little likelihood of benefit in favor of aspirin plus clopidogrel [for] recurrent stroke should the study continue to conclusion." The blood pressure component of the trial is ongoing, and the trial participants have been encouraged to continue taking aspirin without clopidogrel.

Strokes occur when blood vessels that supply the brain rupture or become blocked, such as by a blood clot. Antiplatelet drugs interfere with the formation of blood clots.

Lacunar strokes occur due to chronic high blood pressure, which in turn leads to progressive narrowing and finally blockage of small arteries that supply deep brain structures. They account for up to one-fifth of all strokes and are especially common among African-Americans, Hispanics and people with diabetes. Although lacunar strokes tend to produce relatively small lesions, they can cause disability depending on where they occur in the brain.

The SPS3 trial involves more than 3,000 participants at 82 clinical centers in North and South America and in Spain. The participants are age 30 and older, and all had a recent history of lacunar stroke prior to enrollment. About 52 percent are white, 31 percent Hispanic and 17 percent black.

For the antiplatelet component of the trial, about half of the participants received 325 milligrams of aspirin and 75 milligrams of clopidogrel daily, and the other half received aspirin and placebo. The participants were also randomly assigned to receive either standard control of systolic blood pressure (less than 130 mm Hg) or aggressive control (130-149 mm Hg).

After eight years of study, the annual risk of recurrent stroke was 2.7 percent in the aspirin-only group and 2.5 percent in the aspirin plus clopidogrel group. Most of the recurrent strokes in both groups were lacunar strokes. The rate of serious or life-threatening internal bleeding was 1.1 percent in the aspirin group and 2.1 percent in the dual therapy group. The difference was due mostly to a higher number of gastrointestinal bleeds in the dual therapy group. The percentage of brain bleeds in the two groups was not significantly different. Deaths from any cause were also higher in the aspirin-clopidogrel group.

For both groups, stroke recurrence was lower than the investigators had expected. When the SPS3 trial began in 2003, another large trial that tested warfarin vs. aspirin for stroke prevention had just ended. Warfarin is an anticoagulant, another class of drugs that interferes with blood clotting. That trial, called the Warfarin vs. Aspirin Recurrent Stroke Study (WARSS), found that patients with a history of lacunar strokes who took aspirin had an annual stroke recurrence rate of about 7 percent. (Warfarin and aspirin were about equal.)

This reflects a common trend, Dr. Benavente said. "What we see more and more often in stroke prevention trials is a significant decrease in stroke risk, compared to data from 10 years ago. We have better medications now to control stroke risk factors such as high blood pressure and cholesterol, and these are clearly having an impact."

In prior studies, antiplatelet drugs including aspirin or clopidogrel alone, or a combination of aspirin and dipyridamole, have been shown to reduce stroke risk in patients with heart disease or prior stroke. In one trial, aspirin combined with clopidogrel was more effective than aspirin alone at reducing stroke risk in patients with atrial fibrillation, a type of abnormal heart rhythm. However, other trials involving broader stroke populations found no added benefit from combining aspirin and clopidogrel. Therefore, current practice guidelines recommend aspirin alone, clopidogrel alone, or aspirin plus dipyridamole for secondary prevention after most types of stroke. The SPS3 results are consistent with those guidelines.

Researchers continue to investigate whether the clopidogrel-aspirin combination might be beneficial for patients with other types of stroke, such as transient ischemic attack (TIA). This is a type of stroke in which symptoms fade away in less than 24 hours; it is also a warning that a more damaging stroke may be imminent. The Platelet-Oriented Inhibition in New TIA (POINT) trial is testing whether aspirin plus clopidogrel are effective at preventing major strokes when given within 12 hours of a TIA. That trial is also funded by NINDS.

Will the Colombian government make peace with FARC rebels?

With the aim of ending five decades of war, Colombian president?Juan Manuel Santos announced exploratory talks with leftist FARC rebels on Monday. A peace agreement would conclude a conflict that has killed tens of thousands over the years. ?

Colombia's government?is seeking peace with the country's biggest rebel group, the FARC, and could consider also holding talks with a second guerrilla movement to end five decades of war, President?Juan Manuel Santos?said on Monday.

In a televised address from the presidential palace, Santos said his government would learn from the mistakes of so many previous leaders who tried but failed to clinch a lasting ceasefire with the?Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia.

"Since the first day of my government I have completed my constitutional obligation to find peace. With that aim, we have had exploratory conversations with the FARC to seek an end to the conflict," he said, confirming weeks of swirling rumors that his government had started behind-the-scenes discussions.

He added that the military would continue its operations "throughout every centimeter" of Colombia?while talks continued.

Santos did not provide further details, but said he would reveal more about the talks in the coming days.

A successful peace agreement with the rebels would secure him a place in history as the leader who ended a conflict that has killed tens of thousands over the years and left the Andean nation's reputation in tatters.

In response to a Reuters interview published on Monday with the head of the nation's second biggest rebel group, Santos said the?National Liberation Army, known as the ELN, could also be involved in the peace talks.

"Today the ELN has expressed, via an international news agency, its interest in participating in conversations to put an end to the violence," the president said in his brief speech.

"I tell that group that, within the same framework, they too can be part of the effort to end the conflict."

A?Colombian intelligence?source told Reuters earlier that as part of the deal to hold talks, Santos had agreed that FARC rebels would not be extradited to any other country to stand trial.

Details are still being worked out, the source said, but the negotiations could take place in?Cuba?or?Norway. U.S. President?Barack Obama?is aware of the process and is in agreement, the source said.

Santos, who is at the mid-point of his four-year term in office, has said he would consider peace talks with the FARC only if he was certain the drug-funded group would negotiate in good faith.

Santos focused

The last peace effort ended in shambles.

In 1988 former President?Andres Pasternak?ceded the FARC a safe haven the size of?Switzerland?to promote talks. The rebels took advantage of the breathing space to train fighters, build more than 25 airstrips to fly drug shipments, and set up prison camps to hold its hostages.

Author: AccessnationalArticle Tools:VA loan programs have been essential to helping thousands of veterans finance homes without much of a financial burden. While VA loan programs do not provide the money for the purchase of a home, they do insure the loans veterans are seeking, air jordan femme, so that veterans may qualify for a loan (often a large loan) without a down payment. If veterans didn?t have access to VA loan programs,www.airjordanumagasinfrance.com, many veterans would have a tough time buying a home on their own.

These varied VA loan programs, which are all subject to their own particular guidelines, provide veteran home borrowers a level of security, protection and access to loans.

VA Loan Programs: What Type of Home You Can Buy

VA loan program give veterans access to many types of properties. The one restriction is that the property must be used as a primary residence, since the VA loan programs were made to give vets access to home ownership.

VA loan program guidelines allow veterans to buy:

? Single family homes.
? Townhouses.
? Condo units (in approved projects).
? Fixer-upper homes (in which case the financing can be used for the purchase and the home improvements).
? Manufactured homes.

VA loan programs can also be used for refinancing existing loans and for home improvements, polo ralph lauren, including improvements of energy efficiency.

What are the basics of the VA Loan Program Guidelines?

A veteran must first obtain eligibility when starting the VA Loan process. That eligibility must be obtained by getting a Certificate of Eligibility from the VA with the help of a VA-approved lender such as Access National Mortgage. Next, louboutin pas cher, the financial end of the qualification process begins. The most important factor during this process is a good credit rating. If the veteran receives a loan offer,Logbook Loans ? An Easy Way To Avail Financial Support Article ? Finance Article, then the following VA loan program guidelines apply:

? For joint spousal eligibility the maximum loan guarantee of the lesser of 40% of the loan or $36,000. (An alternative figure of $104,250 applies to some loans over 144,www.airjordanpascherchaussure.com,000.)

What are the protections of the VA Loan Program Guidelines?

Another great benefit of the VA loan program is the creation of a level of buyer protection for veterans. These VA loan program guidelines open up a number of protections to veterans, including:

? Quality inspections to ensure that property meets the housing standards of HUD.
? No PMI (Private Mortgage Insurance) costs, which could lower mortgage payments by hundreds of dollars.
? Protections from predatory lenders and discrimination.
? A warranty for new homes.
? Caps on lender fees and other charges directed at borrowers.
? Compensation for fixing of any structural problems in new construction.

In addition to those protections, the VA also asks that lenders help borrowers when there are financial problems, including forbearance, when loan payments can?t be made. This could shield borrowers from foreclosure and offer other credit protection.

The government created the VA loan program and its guidelines in 1944 in order to give the security and flexibility of the program to veterans in order to start them on the path to home ownership. The veterans then have the protections and advantages they earned by serving their country. If qualifying veterans want to know more about these VA loan programs, they should consult knowledgeable VA lenders and find out all of the benefits.

Logitech teases new Ultimate Ears lineup, says it's bringing 'Power to the Music' on August 29th

Having most recently introduced products like its water-friendly K310 washable keyboard and that TV Cam HD, Logitech's now apparently prepping a fresh Ultimate Ears portfolio for all sound lovers out there. Via its UE page on Zuck's social network, the company's teasing a plethora of products with some rather suppressive shots that don't quite tell us what's on the other end, though we can slightly see new headphones and speakers will be the focus of the main 'Power to the Music' event in a couple of days -- or August 29th, to be exact. For now, it looks like we'll have to keep wondering, but you can get a better hint for what to expect by tapping on the Facebook link below.

Why Arrested Development on Netflix could change everything ...

Whoever might be employing me in the spring of 2013, know this: The moment Netflix debuts the return of Arrested Development, I?m calling in sick. Because on that glorious day, me and the hundreds and thousands of other devotees will be in our pajamas, in front of our laptops and iPads and Xboxes and Rokus, once again enjoying the antics of the Bluth family.

Arrested?s rebirth, over four years in the works, has the potential to completely change the game in terms of the way we regard web content in the future. I mean, cult network sitcom gets a literal second life through the largess of a company that began life as a mail-order DVD service? If you time-traveled to 2006 (the year Fox originally canceled the show), and told this story, no one would believe you.

And yet, it?s happening: scripts have been written, producer/narrator Ron Howard?s Tweeting from the set, and David Cross, on a recent press blitz, said no shortage of interesting things about the series? return, including this to Rolling Stone:

I think it?s going to be 13 episodes, not 10. There?s too much story. Some characters will have two-parters. Everybody sort of participates, sometimes in a bigger way and sometimes in a tiny little thread that goes through everybody else?s stories.

This is the sort of statement that would make a network executive?s head explode, due to the way traditional TV is budgeted and structured on a per-episode basis. But we?re on Netflix?s turf now. Unexplored territory.

Beyond Lilyhammer, which has been renewed for a second season, the industry hasn?t gotten much sense yet of how Netflix?s many high-profile in-the-works projects, such as Arrested, the Eli Roth series Hemlock Grove or the Kevin Spacey-starring House of Cards, will really work out ? especially because the question of how to promote a VOD project is still a bit up in the air.

With theatrical releases, you get premiere dates, big galas. But Netflix is so stealthy about announcing what?s available and what isn?t that websites and email services have been created to update people.

Without doubt, I?ll know what day I?m calling in with the Arrested flu next spring ? it?s impossible to imagine that not being heavily promoted by both the production and Netflix ? but the Netflix experience in general has always boiled down to ?Wait, THAT?S available now? Okay, cool.? Seeing how Netflix adapts to accommodate the original programming they?re launching, while still enabling the casual browsing of the user experience, is a fascinating challenge.

The other element is the fact that like Lilyhammer, all 10-13 episodes of the series will be released at once, setting fans up for epic marathon sessions. The term ?binge viewing? has been coined to describe how many TV fans now consume shows, gulping up entire seasons on DVD or streaming services. It?s a wonderful way to fall in love with a show ? just sinking into it the way you might sink into an epic novel. And Arrested?s new season, according to Cross, sounds designed with just that experience in mind:

I?m not gonna divulge anything, but I know what the stories are and what Mitch [Hurwitz] is doing, and it?s so layered. It?s really audacious and amazing. I think a lot of people will miss the work that is involved, the story, the Venn diagrams that are being created, the domino effect that characters have with each other in their various episodes. I know what he?s doing, and this has never been done on a TV show like this. This makes Lost look like a Spalding Grey monologue. You?ll have to watch each episode more than once.

Given the show?s pre-established track record for hidden jokes and gags, this sounds more than promising.

The AMC series Breaking Bad is a key example of a show that?s grown its audience thanks to binge viewing, indicated by how its ratings have increased with each season, as new viewers discover the show through Netflix. But Vince Gilligan, in a recent interview with KCRW?s The Business, had this to say about the phenomenon:

It?s wonderful, but I do see the worry ? this is a business, it?s show business and if there?s no money to be made, then this wonderful job I have and other jobs like it are going to dry up. So we should all be interested in how they monetize this stuff. It?s wonderful when people binge-watch the show ? I say have at it ? but I do see the companies, not just ours, the various companies concerned that if you?re binge-watching on a DVR, you?re skipping all the commercials. And if the guys who buy the commercials realize that all their commercials are being skipped, they?re going to stop buying commercials.

It?s an attitude you?ll hear elsewhere in the industry ? which may be why Netflix is doubling down on its subscription model. I couldn?t track down the budget for Arrested Development?s new season, but House of Cards?s price tag was reported by some as $100 million, and Hemlock Grove, it?s said, is budgeted at $40 million for 13 episodes ? otherwise known as about $3 million an episode. That?s real TV money ? in fact, it?s the same budget as Breaking Bad.

It?s a long time until the spring of 2013, but looking forward it?s hard to imagine a more important signpost for the convergence of television and the web than Arrested Development. If it succeeds, it?ll legitimize a whole new distribution platform and business model. And if it fails, well, we?ll at least get to see Tobias in his cutoffs again.

The TV singularity approaching us consumers of media is at times a scary one: We?re used to shows that cost millions an episode, but we?re also now used to consuming whatever we want, wherever and whenever we want. Some people think that going forward, these two mindsets won?t be able to co-exist. But Netflix seems to disagree, and the Bluths may be the ones to prove it.

ACQUISITION of BULGARIAN REAL ESTATE and LAND by - Typepad

In spite of the obligations under the European Treaty, Bulgaria was permitted to retain its restrictions on the acquisition of residential property with land, for a period of five years post EU ascension.

Real estate in bulgaria

Bulgarian real estate with land can now be purchased individually, rather than via a registered company

EU- or EEA-nationals, (EEA ? European Economic Area, consisting of Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein) who are non-residents of Bulgaria as well as legal entities incorporated under the laws of a EU- or EEA Member State (except Bulgaria) were not allowed to purchase Bulgarian real estate with land included in the title, until 1 January 2012. As of this date, any EU- or EEA-national may acquire residential?property in Bulgaria?with land, without any limitation under the same conditions as apply to Bulgarian nationals. The same applies for legal entities incorporated under the laws of the EU- or EEA-Member States.

Real estate Bulgaria

EU and EEA countries citizens can buy since Jan 2012

As regards to the acquisition of agricultural estate in bulgaria, forests and forestry land, restrictions for EU- and EEA-residents outside Bulgaria are in force until 1 January 2014. Neither EU- nor EEA-nationals (including foreign legal entities) may acquire agricultural and forest land in Bulgaria until this date.

However, the Law on Bulgarian Property and Use of Agricultural Land and the Forestry Act provide for the acquisition of agricultural land by foreigners in compliance with the provisions of an effective international treaty.?Self-employed farmers who are nationals of another EU-Member State and legally established in Bulgaria may nevertheless acquire agricultural and forest land in Bulgaria, notwithstanding the transposition period. Once such self-employed farmer ceases to meet the exemption-requirements during the 7-year transition period, he must alienate the agricultural land to a qualified person within three years; otherwise the Bulgarian State could exercise its right to purchase the agricultural land.

Department of Performing Arts receives funding to expand facilities ...

Black Box Theatre. Yeager Recital Hall. McCrary Theatre.

Students and faculty alike will recognize these as the settings for many of Elon University?s performing arts productions. On these stages, countless stories have been told and memories made.

But with the help of a $750,000 gift from Elon parents Don and Ellen Scott, those scenes are about to get a makeover.

The Department of Performing Arts will soon be expanding its facilities in the Gerald L. Francis Center, which will include new spaces for rehearsal and performance. Among the new facilities will be a studio theater and multiple rehearsal studios tailored for dance and music.

?We are simply grateful to be receiving these wonderful spaces,? said Fred Rubeck, chair of the Department of Performing Arts. ?Having the extra room will change how we work and allow us to continue to grow and improve our productions.?

The department is currently housed in the Center for the Arts, a 75,000-square-foot facility that many might think is big enough to fulfill the department?s needs. But the quality of Elon?s productions requires sufficient rehearsal space that the Center cannot offer, according to Rubeck.

?In order to present plays, dance concerts and musicals in a theater, we need to rehearse in a room that approximates the size and shape of the theater,? he said. ?We spend more than twice the time in the rehearsal space than we do in the theater itself, so (it is) a very important facility for us. This is especially true since McCrary Theatre also houses events for other departments and programs. Having a room that allows us to more accurately prepare will help us enormously.?

But faculty members aren?t the only ones clamoring for more rehearsal space. Students, such as junior music theater major Karrah Fleshman, are also finding they need more room to grow.

?We were outgrowing the current performing arts center,? Fleshman said. ?Singing, dancing and acting ? these are our classes, our grades. It?s necessary that each student have that time and that space to do their homework. This new addition came at the perfect time.?

Members of the department shouldn?t be hasty, though, Rubeck said. Although the Scotts? generous donation has fulfilled much of the financial need, fundraising is incomplete.

?Construction will not begin until the remaining funds are raised,? Rubeck said. ?I expect that once construction begins, it will take nine to 12 months.?

The project, which will ultimately be named the Scott Studios, will be a 13,000-square-foot expansion of the northwest corner of the Gerald L. Francis Center, named after Elon?s executive vice president and former provost Gerry Francis. The center currently houses the School of Health Sciences, which is largely made up of Elon?s physical therapy and physician assistant studies programs.

But when the Department of Performing Arts? new facilities are complete, its program will be enhanced tenfold, according to Rubeck.

?(The facilities will give us) space to create, space to learn, space to work and an expansion of our home for our growing performing arts family,? Rubeck said.

Fleshman said she agrees that when it comes to performing arts, bigger is better.

?I think it will help the department immensely as well as help us maintain the caliber of talent that we incorporate into every recital, cabaret or piece of theater,? Fleshman said. ?The more space we have, the more we can do, and the larger amount of students we can showcase.?

Fed may struggle to deliver expected growth boost

LONDON (Reuters) - It's the end of August, so all eyes will again be on the small Wyoming resort town of Jackson -- population 9,577 -- to see whether Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke fuels or dampens hopes of fresh monetary easing to lift the U.S. economy.

The annual Jackson Hole summer retreat hosted by the Kansas City Fed has become a highlight of the global central banking calendar.

Expectations this year have not soared to the heights of 2010 or 2011, but equity and commodity prices have been rising and could react badly if the U.S. central bank chief pulls his punches.

After all, "many" Fed policymakers judged at their August 1 meeting that extra easing would probably be warranted fairly soon in the absence of signs of a "substantial and sustainable" economic recovery, according to the minutes of their deliberations.

Yet some economists reckon not even a third round of Fed asset purchases would do much to perk up world growth.

For a start, bond yields are already very low and the Fed has already said it expects short-term rates to remain close to zero at least until late 2014. The law of diminishing returns is at work.

Above all, buying more U.S. Treasuries or mortgage-backed securities would do nothing to address the euro zone's underlying problems or wean China off its dependence on an investment boom that looks unsustainable, said Julian Jessop with Capital Economics, a London consultancy.

"These, and not the health of the U.S. financial system, are now the biggest challenges facing the global economy," he said.

So whereas China's July exports to the United States were flat from a year earlier and shipments to Southeast Asia rose briskly, those to the European Union plunged 16 percent. As a result, total exports edged up just 1 percent.

"Most of the deceleration in export growth is explained by the European crisis," said Joy Yang, an economist for Mirae Asset Management in Hong Kong.

That's why markets will be glued not only to Bernanke's speech on Friday but also to policy signals from the euro zone ahead of a September 6 meeting of the European Central Bank.

WAITING FOR DETAILS

Investors want the ECB to flesh out President Mario Draghi's promise to "do what it takes" to preserve the single currency despite a collapse of confidence in the capacity of the likes of Spain and Italy to tame their debts.

That evaporation of trust is weighing on the euro zone economy, which is set to shrink this quarter, polls of purchasing executives suggest. Germany's closely watched IFO survey, due on Monday, is likely to confirm the deteriorating trend.

By contrast, economists polled by Reuters expect revised U.S. gross domestic product data on Wednesday to show the economy expanded at a 1.7 percent annualized pace in the second quarter, up from an initial estimate of 1.5 percent.

The Fed has made plain its dissatisfaction with such tepid growth; the U.S. unemployment rate has fallen to just 8.3 percent from 9.1 percent in July 2011.

But markets are split on what policy steps Bernanke will flag. Many economists expect the Fed will promise to hold short-term rates extremely low for even longer while keeping the option of further asset purchases in reserve for now.

It's hard to see how that would be a game-changer for the rest of the world.

Indeed, bond strategists at Deutsche Bank said developments in the U.S. housing market and in credit conditions were already consistent with slightly above-trend growth; they said their key source of concern was a slowdown in Asia.

On that score, Yang at Mirae said China, Asia's powerhouse, might feel more comfortable in relaxing its own monetary policy if the Fed moved first.

But she said the key to a short-term recovery in growth was faster domestic investment. Yet project approvals were being held up by the approaching turnover in China's central leadership and the accompanying churn of provincial officials.

"Even if the U.S. started to ease more aggressively, the binding constraint on the fiscal side is the new leadership," she said. "Everything is waiting for the political transition."

Ingredients You Never Want to See on Your Nutrition Label ...

The year was 1950, and The Magic 8-Ball had just arrived in stores. It looked like a toy, but it wasn?t. It was a future-telling device, powered by the unknown superpowers that lived inside its cheap plastic shell. Despite a bit of an attitude??Don?t count on it,? ?My reply is no??it was a huge success. Americans, apparently, want to see their futures.

A few decades later, Congress passed the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act that, among other things, turned the 45,000 food products in the average supermarket into fortune-telling devices. Americans inexplicably yawned. I?m trying to change that. Why? The nutrition label can predict the future size of your pants and health care bills.

Unfortunately, these labels aren?t as clear and direct as the Magic 8-Ball. Consider the list of ingredients: The Food and Drug Administration has approved more than 3,000 additives, most of which you?ve never heard of. But the truth is, you don?t have to know them all. You just need to be able to parse out the bad stuff. Do that and you?ll have a pretty good idea how your future will shape up?whether you?ll end up overweight and unhealthy or turn out to be fit, happy, and energized.

While researching the new Eat This, Not That! 2013: The No-Diet Weight Loss Solution, I identified 8 ingredients you never want to see on the nutrition label. Should you put down products that contain them? As the Magic 8-Ball would say: Signs point to yes.

BHA

This preservative is used to prevent rancidity in foods that contain oils. Unfortunately, BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) has been shown to cause cancer in rats, mice, and hamsters. The reason the FDA hasn?t banned it is largely technical?the cancers all occurred in the rodents? forestomachs, an organ that humans don?t have. Nevertheless, the study, published in the Japanese Journal of Cancer Research, concluded that BHA was ?reasonably anticipated to be a carcinogen,? and as far as I?m concerned, that?s reason enough to eliminate it from your diet.

You?ll find it in: Fruity Pebbles, Cocoa Pebbles

Parabens

These synthetic preservatives are used to inhibit mold and yeast in food. The problem is parabens may also disrupt your body?s hormonal balance. A study in Food Chemical Toxicology found that daily ingestion decreased sperm and testosterone production in rats, and parabens have been found present in breast cancer tissues.

You?ll find it in: Baskin-Robbins sundaes

Partially Hydrogenated Oil

?I?ve harped on this before, but it bears repeating: Don?t confuse ?0 g trans fat? with being trans fat-free. The FDA allows products to claim zero grams of trans fat as long as they have less than half a gram per serving. That means they can have 0.49 grams per serving and still be labeled a no-trans-fat food. Considering that two grams is the absolute most you ought to consume in a day, those fractions can quickly add up. The telltale sign that your snack is soiled with the stuff? Look for partially hydrogenated oil on the ingredient statement. If it?s anywhere on there, then you?re ingesting artery-clogging trans fat.

You?ll find it in: Long John Silver?s Popcorn Shrimp, Celeste frozen pizzas

FIGHT FAT WITH FAT! Some fats, like trans fat, will pad you with extra pounds, but other types can help you shed unwanted weight. See for yourself?pick up these 5 Fatty Foods that Make You Skinny today!

Sodium Nitrite

Nitrites and nitrates are used to inhibit botulism-causing bacteria and to maintain processed meats? pink hues, which is why the FDA allows their use. Unfortunately, once ingested, nitrite can fuse with amino acids (of which meat is a prime source) to form nitrosamines, powerful carcinogenic compounds. Ascorbic and erythorbic acids?essentially vitamin C?have been shown to decrease the risk, and most manufacturers now add one or both to their products, which has helped. Still, the best way to reduce risk is to limit your intake.

You?ll find it in: Oscar Mayer hot dogs, Hormel bacon

Caramel Coloring

This additive wouldn?t be dangerous if you made it the old-fashioned way?with water and sugar, on top of a stove. But the food industry follows a different recipe: They treat sugar with ammonia, which can produce some nasty carcinogens. How carcinogenic are these compounds? A Center for Science in the Public Interest report asserted that the high levels of caramel color found in soda account for roughly 15,000 cancers in the U.S. annually. Another good reason to scrap soft drinks? They?re among The 20 Worst Drinks in America.

You?ll find it in: Coke/Diet Coke, Pepsi/Diet Pepsi

Castoreum

Castoreum is one of the many nebulous ?natural ingredients? used to flavor food. Though it isn?t harmful, it is unsettling. Castoreum is a substance made from beavers? castor sacs, or anal scent glands. These glands produce potent secretions that help the animals mark their territory in the wild. In the food industry, however, 1,000 pounds of the unsavory ingredient are used annually to imbue foods?usually vanilla or raspberry flavored?with a distinctive, musky flavor.

You?ll find it in: Potentially any food containing ?natural ingredients?

Food Dyes

Plenty of fruit-flavored candies and sugary cereals don?t contain a single gram of produce, but instead rely on artificial dyes and flavorings to suggest a relationship with nature. Not only do these dyes allow manufacturers to mask the drab colors of heavily processed foods, but certain hues have been linked to more serious ailments. A Journal of Pediatrics study linked Yellow 5 to hyperactivity in children, Canadian researchers found Yellow 6 and Red 40 to be contaminated with known carcinogens, and Red 3 is known to cause tumors. The bottom line? Avoid artificial dyes as much as possible.

You?ll find it in: Lucky Charms, Skittles, Jell-O

THE DOMINO EFFECT: Sugar doesn?t just come in the form of cookies and candy. Discover the insidious ways it can creep into your diet with 9 Sneaky Sources of Sugar.

Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein

Hydrolyzed vegetable protein, used as a flavor enhancer, is plant protein that has been chemically broken down into amino acids. One of these acids, glutamic acid, can release free glutamate. When this glutamate joins with free sodium in your body, they form monosodium glutamate (MSG), an additive known to cause adverse reactions?headaches, nausea, and weakness, among others?in sensitive individuals. When MSG is added to products directly, the FDA requires manufacturers to disclose its inclusion on the ingredient statement. But when it occurs as a byproduct of hydrolyzed protein, the FDA allows it to go unrecognized.

?I studied abroad with AIFS in Rome, Italy in the fall of ?2004. Though it?s been eight years since I set off on my overseas adventure with AIFS, I wanted to reach out and express how unforgettable my study abroad exerience was.

My AIFS program was the most eye opening and life changing experience of my life. One of my good friends studied abroad in Rome with AIFS in?2003 and convinced me to apply.?? I cannot express how grateful I am?for this friend; AIFS Rome exceeded all of my expectations and was the most memorable experience of my life.

I learned more in those four months than I did over a four year span in college. I grew as an individual, I learned a second language, I acquired the skills necessary to travel alone and to be completely independent, and I learned the value of cross cultural relationships.? My list goes on and on, but the gist of my study abroad experience is this: AIFS was an incredible program and it changed my life forever. Since study abroad, I?ve lived overseas and traveled to numerous foreign countries.

A truly satisfied AIFS alumna and aspiring world traveler,

California Gives Young Illegal Aliens Driver's Licenses!

California is on the verge of allowing hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants to receive driver's licenses for the first time in nearly two decades.

The key question is how to do it.

The issue of granting driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants has raged in the Legislature for much of the past decade, without resolution, but fighting is largely moot now due to a new federal policy.

Dunst bars dad from seeing 'Bachelorette'

Frazer Harrison / Getty Images

Cast members (from left) Adam Scott, Lizzy Caplan, Kirsten Dunst, Rebel Wilson and Isla Fisher arrive at the premiere of "Bachelorette" at ArcLight Cinemas in Hollywood, Calif., on Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012.

By Marc Malkin, E! Online

Kirsten Dunst's new comedy, "Bachelorette," is raunchy. Like, really raunchy. So much so that the former child star has banned her dad from seeing it.

Find out what James Marsden has to say about his sex scene with Kirsten Dunst

"I can't do that to him," Dunst, 30, told us at last night's Hollywood premiere of the flick (available now on VOD and out in theaters on Sept. 7) at the ArcLight. "I didn't even tell him there was an L.A. premiere. And I was like, 'Yeah, dad -- don't even try getting it on iTunes because you will not like this movie. You're a prude. You will hate it. I know you!'"

The flick revolves around three women (Dunst, Isla Fisher and Lizzy Caplan) who are asked to be in the wedding of a friend (Rebel Wilson) they used to bully in high school. The night before the big day is filled with sex, drugs, booze and so much more.?

One particularly bush-inducing scene shows Dunst having quickie -- and very verbal -- sex in a strip club bathroom with ?"X-Men" hottie James Marsden.

Check out pics from the movie's Hollywood premiere

"You just roll with it," Dunst said of filming the romp. "You hope that you're working with somebody who is chill and not weird and is like, 'Can I touch you here? Can I touch you there?' No! Let's just go for it and get it over with."

Yeah, it's a far cry from Dunst's previous work. "I've wanted to do a comedy but it's hard sometimes because people don't see you in a comedic way, even though I did most of my teen roles in comedies," she said. "This was perfect time and a perfect script."

Just not perfect for Dad.

ARCHOS introduces the Gen10 XS line, led by the 101 XS

101 XS

ARCHOS today introduced the Gen10 XS line, the successor to last summer’s G9 tablets. The 101 XS, the company’s latest flagship tablet, will be the first to carry the Gen10 XS name, and comes equipped with a 10.1-inch display, a dual-core OMAP 4470 processor clocked at 1.2 GHz, and a nearly-stock Ice Cream Sandwich experience. ARCHOS says that a Jelly Bean update will be released in early Q4 2012. The 101 XS weighs only 21 ounces and measures .31 inches thin.

The defining feature of ARCHOS’ new line is the “Coverboard”, a magnetic keyboard that doubles as the tablet’s cover. The Coverboard connects to the Gen101 XS via a proprietary dock to enable a full-keyboard experience, complete with shortcut buttons custom tailored to Android 4.0. The Coverboard, ARCHOS says, is designed to protect the 101 XS while adding only .2 inches to the tablet’s size, and ships with every Gen10 XS tablet.

The Gen101 XS will be available through major retailers beginning in November with a suggested retail price of $399. The 9.7 inch 97 XS and the 8-inch 80 XS will be available “later in 2012.” ARCHOS’ full presser can be found after the break, while our full review can be found here.

German state raids buildings in crackdown on neo-Nazi groups

Sascha Schuermann / AP

Police in plain clothes load items into a vehicle which they found in an apartment of alleged neo-Nazis in Dortmund, Germany on Wednesday.

By NBC News staff and wire services

DUESSELDORF, Germany???Nearly 1,000 police officers raided clubhouses and apartments of known neo-Nazis in western Germany on Thursday after a ban was placed on three violent far-right groups in the country's most populous state.

Ralf Jaeger, interior minister of North-Rhine Westphalia, announced the ban as part of an intensified crackdown on neo-Nazis in the industrial state. Police searched 146 premises, confiscating weapons, computer hard drives and election posters of the far-right National Democratic Party (NPD).

"(The objects seized) expose the tight bonds within the far-right scene,'' Jaeger said, referring to the relationship between the NPD and groups of violent militants known as "Kameradschaften" -- or "comradeships."

Jaeger called the groups affected by the ban "xenophobic, racist and anti-Semitic,'' adding: "They employ fists and knives against their political opponents.''

Although no arrests were made, Jaeger said the seizures could bolster attempts to ban the NPD, which Germany's national intelligence agency says is racist, anti-Semitic, revisionist and inspired by Adolf Hitler's Nazi ideology.

Groups with explicit neo-Nazi ideology are prohibited in Germany, but the NPD has so far been able to skirt politicians' and security officials' attempts to ban it. One such attempt against the NPD failed in 2003 after witnesses in the case were exposed as intelligence agency informants.

"We will continue to crack down on these enemies of the state and tread on their black leather boots,'' Jaeger said, referring to the footwear popular among skinheads.

The NPD has representatives in two state assemblies ? Saxony and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern?? but not in the federal parliament.

It blames immigrants for crime and unemployment and its voters are mostly unemployed young men with little education.

Last December, state authorities in North-Rhine Westphalia set up a new unit in Dusseldorf to police far-right players after shocking disclosures that a secretive neo-Nazi cell based in the eastern state of Thuringia had murdered 10 people ? eight ?of Turkish origin, one person of Greek origin, and a policewoman ? between 2000 and 2007, according to a report by Deutsche-Welle.?

DW reported that the state also set up special investigative units in Aachen and Dortmund as well as the Rhine River city of Cologne, where J?ger banned another far-right comradeship last May.

Reuters contributed to this report.

D-Link Amplifi Cloud Router 5700 (DIR-865L)

The D-Link Amplifi Cloud Router 5700 (DIR-865L)?marks the advent of the company's entry into 802.11ac technology. Although the latest 802.11 wireless networking standard has yet to be ratified (and the standard won't be until beginning of 2013) many of the major consumer router vendors have already or are planning to ship a pre-draft 802.11ac router offering. I am not a fan of pre-draft routers. I remember the pains of many of the pre-draft 802.11n routers when they appeared on the scene. But for early adopters who've just got to have an 11ac router pre-draft, there are better options available than the DIR-865L, which costs $196 (street). The router offers no speed or range improvements over other 11ac routers I've tested, and retains some of the unpleasant interface experiences I encountered with the last D-Link router I tested?the D-Link Amplifi HD Media Router 3000 (DIR-857)
.

Design and Specs
The DIR-865L's design deviates from other routers in the Amplifi line. Instead of the flat, spaceship construction of the DIR-857, this router looks very similar to Netgear's dual-band routers, such as the N750. It's not an unattractive,?just plain. The DIR-865L is a large router with an attached base; it's meant to operate upright. There are three LEDs on the front panel for WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup), Internet connectivity, and power status. The rear panel has a USB 2.0 port, four Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports, and a WAN port. The back also is where you'll find the device's reset button and power toggle on/off switch.

Setup
The router ships with a quick install guide foldout and a Wi-Fi configuration note card that has the URL for the management interface, default username, password, and pre-configured SSID and passphrase. Something noticeably missing is a CD for setup: This is the first D-Link router I've tested that does not ship with a setup disk. A spokesperson for D-Link confirmed that, moving forward, setup disks will not be included with new devices.

And that's okay (at least for set up, lack of a CD causes issues with initally establishing a mydink account, but that's later in this review): Setting up the DIR-865L is easy enough without a CD because the setup wizard is baked into the router's software. Once cables are properly connected, you can go into the management interface via a browser and just follow the directions from the D-Link Setup Wizard. You access the interface by going to the IP address of the router from a browser or using the link http://dlinkrouter.local.

The wizard first detects the Internet connection and then goes into the wireless network settings. As mentioned, the wireless network is preconfigured, but you can change the settings at this point in the wizard. Users can also enable Captcha as an additional security measure to prevent unauthorized login to the router.

D-Link's setup process is simple, quick, and indicative of the direction many of these networking devices are headed: making their products simpler for average home users to set up and configure.

Features
While the look of the DIR-865L has vastly changed from other routers in D-Link's Amplifi line, the management interface retains the same orange-and-black-themed UI that's been in D-Link routers since the D-Link Xtreme N Dual Band Gigabit Router DIR-825 I owned about five years ago.

D-Link has always provided plenty of advanced options for users who want them, and there are plenty of these in the DIR-865L. Some of these advanced capabilities include guest networking, virtual server support, network filtering, and access control.

A strong component of the feature set and one that's even more advanced than most competitors is IPv6 support. The DIR-865L not only offers an IPv6 Internet Connection setup wizard and manual setup for local IPv6 network settings, but IPV6 firewall and routing. These features offer much fuller IPv6 support rather than the simple IPv6 passthrough-only support in other consumer routers. Enabling IPv6 passthrough on a router will allow clients connected to the router access to IPv4 and IPv6 websites. However, the DIR-865L allows inbound traffic to your network in a way that does not give you the control over IPv6 traffic such as providing an IPv6 firewall.
