Samsung Galaxy Victory 4G LTE (Sprint)

Sprint's 4G LTE coverage may still be scarce, but if you're buying a new smartphone?you plan to use for the next two years, you should probably get a model that supports it. That seems to be what Samsung is counting on with the $99.99 Samsung Galaxy Victory 4G LTE. Right now, it's Sprint's only 4G LTE phone running Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) that costs less than $100, which will definitely help to move some units. But other than that, everything about this phone is just okay, from the call quality to the camera, to the processor and the display. It may be called the Victory, but it's too average to be a winner.

Design and Call Quality
Measuring 4.8 by 2.5 by 0.5 inches (HWD) and weighing 4.9 ounces, the Victory is bulky for a phone with a 4-inch screen and no keyboard. It's made entirely of slippery, shiny gray plastic that looks and feels a little cheap. Really, everything about this phone suggests that it should be free.

The 4-inch, 800-by-480-pixel display looks perfectly adequate; there's just no wow factor. There are three capacitive touch keys that have been embossed onto the plastic chin beneath the display. I don't care for the look, and they don't work as reliably as on-display keys either. There is often a pronounced delay between pressing a key and the corresponding action taking place; I tapped twice on more than one occasion, though I'm not sure if I had to do that because of lag or because of my first tap didn't register. The onscreen keyboard is a little cramped for typing, but you get used to it.

The Victory supports Sprint's brand new 4G LTE network as well as its much slower 3G network. In this year's?Fastest Mobile Networks?tests we found Sprint's 3G network to be the slowest of the nationwide networks. We also got a chance to?test Sprint's 4G LTE network?and found it to be a vast improvement. Unfortunately, it's only available in a limited number of cities right now, so chances are you'll be stuck with significantly slower speeds until it comes to your town. Sprint LTE is not yet available in New York City, where we tested the Victory, so all of our tests were conducted over 3G.

Reception and call quality are average. Voices sound loud but fuzzy in the phone's earpiece. Transmissions through the mic are a bit muffled, and noise cancellation is average. I had no trouble pairing the phone with my?Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset, and Samsung's Siri-like S Voice assistant worked well. The speakerphone sounds fine and is loud enough to use outdoors. Talk time over 3G was very good at 9 hours and 53 minutes.

Hardware, OS, and Apps
Powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm MSM8960 Lite processor, the Victory's benchmark scores were good, but not great. The phone performs much stronger than Sprint's lower-end smartphones, but not quite near top-tier levels. It's still fine for gaming and running most of the 500,000+ apps or games available in the Google Play store, but you're not going to see the same performance as you would on the Galaxy S III; this phone actually has more in common with the Galaxy S II.

The Victory runs Android 4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and there's no word yet on an update to Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean). Samsung has left its mark on the OS, but less so here than on its other new devices. You get five home screens to swipe between that come prepopulated with apps and widgets. Samsung has also added a tiny strip at the bottom of the home and app screens that allows you to slide through pages just by dragging a finger over it.

There's some undeletable bloatware, though mercifully less than we've seen on other new handsets recently. Some apps are worth a look, like Kies Air, which lets you view your phone's contacts, messages, and media through a PC's Web browser.?

You also get NFC support and Google Wallet comes preinstalled. And you can use Samsung's S Beam, which allows you to transfer files by tapping two phones together using a combination of NFC and Wi-Fi Direct.

Multimedia and Conclusions
There's an empty, side-mounted microSD card slot on the left edge of the phone. My 32 and 64GB SanDisk cards worked fine in it. You also get 1.75GB of free internal storage.

All of our music test files played back except for FLAC, and sound quality was fine over Altec Lansing BackBeat?Bluetooth headphones, though there was some audible background noise over 3.5mm wired headphones. All test videos played back too, at resolutions up to 1080p, but audio stuttered on DivX files.

The 5-megapixel camera features autofocus and an LED flash. In keeping with the theme, performance is average. Shutter delay is pronounced, at 1.2 seconds. Photos look passable, but colors and details can both be sharper. The camera also records 720p video at 30 frames per second indoors and out, but it looks somewhat blurred. There's a 1.3 megapixel camera on the front of the phone for video chat.

The Samsung Galaxy Victory 4G LTE should be free; if it was, this would be a much different review. But at $100, it's just so overwhelmingly average that I'd recommend you double your investment for a phone with a lot more wow factor. Samsung's own Galaxy S III, or the HTC EVO 4G LTE ?both fit the bill. They have bigger, beautiful displays, faster processors, better cameras, and better call quality. You'll be happy with either one. The LG Viper?is Sprint's other sub-$100 LTE phone, but while it has a better camera and an eco-friendly build, it's still running Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), so whether or not that tradeoff is worth it is up to you.?

The Do's And Don'ts Of Commercial Real Estate ...

Although it can be exciting to own commercial property, it also does take plenty of effort to upkeep. As a result, you may wonder where to start to be sure that all the details are handled. It can be challenging to learn all you must know regarding ownership of commercial property, but the tips in this article can help you on the road to acquiring and owning commercial property.

When you are first starting out in real estate investing, the best thing is to keep it simple and start with one investment strategy at a time. Select a type of property that you think would make a good place to begin, and focus on it. It?s good to find a niche and do very, very well at it rather than flitting from one investment type to another without much success.

There are many things to consider when determining the best option between two commercial properties. When choosing between the two, think big! The difficulty in securing financing doesn?t increase linearly with the size of the building you are buying. Generally, this is the same situation as if you were buying something in bulk, the more you buy the cheaper the price of each unit.

Look into any potential environmental problems before you buy. For instance, your property could be endangered by the presence of hazardous waste. It?s up to you to be aware of the issues, fix them, and have them inspected once complete.

Familiarize yourself with the performance metrics used by each firm. You will need to know how they select property criteria, what methods are used when negotiating and how they calculate how much square footage you will need. These are all things you should know before you sign with a firm.

There are differences between brokers in the commercial real estate field. There are agents who only represent tenants and there are full-service brokers who work with both tenants and landlords. It might be more beneficial to hire a broker who works only with tenants, as he has more experience working with those searching for a property.

As you have read, to be really successful, you do have to do your proper research, and then put in a decent amount of work and effort into it. It?s also worth mentioning that it?s a never-ending process. If you remember the tips you have learned from this article, you will soon own the ideal commercial property for your

NFL Week Three: Jacksonville Jaguars (0-2) At Indianapolis Colts (1-1)- Preview

Sep 16, 2012; Indianapolis, IN, USA; Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne (87) stands on the sidelines during the game against the Mineesota Vikings at Lucas Oil Stadium. Indianapolis defeats Minnesota 23-20. Mandatory Credit: Brian Spurlock-US PRESSWIRE

Like last week, this is another game that this young Colts team should win. Not can win. Not might win. Should. It's games like these that test just how effective Chuck Pagano is at communicating his message. All offseason, preseason, and for much this young regular season Pagano has preached an underdog mantra. He even went so far as to give shirts to players to remind them of where people ranked the team (Hint: Dead Last).

Against the Jaguars, that message won't work.

Jacksonville is an inferior team. The Colts are favored, and they are the better team. That is no slight to Jacksonville's defense (which is excellent), but quarterback Blaine Gabbert has struggled these first two games. Maurice Jones-Drew will see more action, but he is still only three weeks removed from a lengthy holdout. If the Colts run defense has indeed improved, they will control MJD and win.

Start Time: 1:00 p.m. ET

Place: Lucas Oil Stadium; Indianapolis, IN

Weather:

JAGUARS vs. COLTS - Sunday, 1 P.M., CBS
FORECAST - Mostly sunny and cool; winds: WNW 5-15 mph
Kickoff ? 57
Half Time - 59
Second Half ? 61

So, it seems like a good chance that the roof will be open.

Score Projection: Colts 28, Jaguars 20

Sandwich Generation Caregivers | Arizona Elder Law Attorney ...

Two articles highlight the issues faced by family caregivers ?sandwiched? between the needs of their school-aged children and their parents:??Feeling the Strain of Caregiving,? by Connie Cone Sexton (www.azcentral.com), and ?When Parents Move in with Kids,? by Jane Bryant Quinn (www.aarp.org/bulletin).

Working in an elder law firm that specializes in life care planning, ?sandwich-generation? families are often the ones who seek us out because of the need for comprehensive legal services and care coordination for their aging parents.?Perhaps they need to draft a power of attorney and need assistance navigating the medical system. It could be that they need to file for conservatorship because Dad is no longer able to manage his own finances. Upon further discussion, it becomes apparent that they also need help in locating reliable respite care, an assisted living facility or resources to cope with the added stress in their lives.

Whatever issues these caregivers may be facing, the AZ Republic article offered some sage advice:

  • Reward yourself with respite breaks often.
  • Watch for signs of depression and get professional help when you need it.
  • Accept offers of help and suggest specific things to be done.
  • Talk to older children about the changing family dynamics.
  • Have special time for your children to talk and do fun activities.

And I would add to that list, to contact an elder law attorney (www.lcplfa.org)?who can help alleviate some of the caregiving burden when money or medical issues impact an elder?s ability to remain living on their own.

Exxon spends $1.6B on North Dakota field

Exxon Mobil Corp. will spend $1.6 billion to boost its holdings in the massive Bakken oil field in North Dakota and Montana by 50 percent.

Exxon said Thursday it will buy all of the Bakken shale assets held by Denbury Resources Inc. for $1.6 billion in cash. Denbury will also receive Exxon's interest in two fields in Wyoming and Texas.

Exxon will acquire 196,000 acres, boosting its holdings in the region to almost 600,000 acres. The acreage acquired is expected to produce 15,000 barrels of oil and other hydrocarbons per day in the second half of this year. Exxon can increase production with new drilling in the future.

Oil production in the Bakken has soared in recent years, recently passing 600,000 barrels per day, or about 10 percent of total U.S. production. That's helped fuel the biggest jump in domestic oil production in more than 40 years. North Dakota recently passed Alaska and California to become the second biggest oil producing state in the U.S., behind Texas.

The deal is relatively tiny for Exxon, which produced an average of 4.2 million barrels of oil and other hydrocarbons per day in this year's second quarter. But even small additions help because oil and gas giants such as Exxon struggle every year to secure enough new resources to replace all that they've sold.

The purchase increases Exxon's U.S. oil production by about 3 percent. It also makes the Irving, Texas company one of the biggest leaseholders in the Bakken. Other big leaseholders in the region include Continental Resources Inc., EOG Resources Inc., Hess Corp. and Marathon Oil Corp.

Shares of Denbury, which is based in Plano, Texas, rose 62 cents, or 3.7 percent, to close at $17.34 Thursday. Exxon shares rose 95 cents, or 1 percent, to $91.52.

DNA analysis aids in classifying single-celled algae

ScienceDaily (Sep. 20, 2012) ? For nearly 260 years -- since Carl Linnaeus developed his system of naming plants and animals -- researchers classified species based on visual attributes like color, shape and size. In the past few decades, researchers found that sequencing DNA can more accurately identify species. A group of single-celled algae -- Symbiodinium -- that live inside corals and are critical to their survival -- are only now being separated into species using DNA analysis, according to biologists.

"Unfortunately with Symbiodinium, scientists have been hindered by a traditional morphology-based system of species identification that doesn't work because these organisms all pretty much look the same -- small round brown cells," said Todd LaJeunesse, assistant professor of biology at Penn State. "This delay in adopting the more accurate convention of identifying species using genetic techniques has greatly impeded progress in the research of symbiotic reef-building corals, especially with regard to their ability to withstand global warming."

LaJeunesse and his colleagues looked at Symbiodinium that previously had been grouped together as subsets of the same species. They report their results in the September issue of the Journal of Phycology. They examined specific DNA markers -- identifiers -- from the organisms cell nuclei, mitochondria and chloroplasts. Even though the symbionts appeared very much the same, except for their size, genetic evidence confirmed that the two are different species altogether.

These findings indicate that hundreds of other coral symbionts already identified with preliminarily genetic data are also distinct species with unique ecological distributions.

"The recognition of symbiont species diversity should substantially improve research into reef-building corals and facilitate breakthroughs in our understanding of their complex biology," said LaJeunesse.

He began his work of classifying Symbiodinium using genetic techniques as part of his research into their ecology and evolution and in later studies of coral bleaching events related to global warming.

"Knowing exactly which Symbiodinium species you're dealing with is important because certain species of Symbiodinium associate with certain species of coral," he said. "Although many corals are dying as a result of global climate change, some may be able to survive because they associate with Symbiodinium species that are better adapted to warm water temperatures."

Other researchers on this project were John Everett Parkinson, graduate student in biology, Penn State, and James Davis Reimer, associate professor of biology, University of the Ryukyus, Okinawa.

The National Science Foundation supported this research.

Decorative webs attract dinner

Orb-weaver spiders attract insects to their webs with ultraviolet (UV) decorations, a study has found.

The function of the intricate patterns in the webs of orb-weaver spiders is subject to much debate in the scientific community.

Previous explanations have identified them as bird scarers, mating signs, sun shades and camouflage.

Researchers now suggest the UV light-reflecting patterns could trick flying insects into landing on them.

Scientists from the University of Incheon, South Korea, undertook the study published in the journal Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology.

They studied wasp spiders (Argiope bruennichi), a species common throughout Europe, north Africa and parts of Asia, which are named for the females' familiar striped abdomens.

During construction of the webs, the spiders are known to sporadically add zigzag patterns leading out from the centre. These patterns are created with special white silk known to reflect much more UV light than other strands in the web.

The scientists questioned why the animals would produce a stealthy ambush in the form of a non-reflective web only to decorate it with an eye-catching design.

To test the effects of the decoration, known as "stabilimentum", researchers compared decorated webs to webs without the patterns.

Associate Professor Kim Kil-Won and his team looked at the type of insects caught in each type of web, which revealed a possible clue to the purpose of stabilimenta.

They found a link between the decorations and increased foraging success for the spiders.

"The effects of stabilimenta on foraging success appear to be due to increased interception of UV-sensitive insect pollinators," said Prof Kim.

The team found that webs with the decorations caught twice as many large prey insects than unadorned webs.

Prof Kim explained that pollinators, such as the 20 families of flies, wasps, beetles and butterflies discovered in the decorated webs, have greater visual sensitivity to UV light.

Previous studies have shown how these pollinating insects are attracted to flowers with high UV-reflectance and Prof Kim suggested that the highly reflective web patterns capitalise on this attraction.

"We think that [by] decorating the web with a stabilimentum the spiders use a pre-existing bias in a prey animal toward UV-reflective surfaces," said Prof Kim.

However, the biologist added that his results did not invalidate earlier studies.

"Probably stabilimentum mechanically stabilise and strengthen the orb web," he said, "This property would help to maintain struggling large prey on the web."

He suggested that the adaptation could be used in different ways by different species of orb-weaver spider but further study is required to understand its original function.

"The evolutionary origin of the trait may have to be separated from its contemporary role," Prof Kim told BBC Nature.

hurricane windows Austin,replacement - Do I Need Hurricane ...

The answer to this question is a simple one: If you live anywhere in the Gulf of Mexico region, you should install hurricane windows in your home or business. This is especially true for the Houston area, as its proximity to the coast makes it an easy target for strong summer storms and the occasional hurricane. Just because you've never experienced a hurricane in your area, doesn't mean you are safe from disaster. It's usually the homes that are the least prepared that assume the most damages when a hurricane comes rolling into the area. Use this guide to hurricane windows and decide for yourself whether or not you need to install these fantastic windows to keep your home safe from storms.

Protection

Gulf Coast Windows prides itself on their durable glass hurricane windows. By pressing together a polyvinyl butyral (PVB) interlayer between the two window panes under extreme pressure, superior strength is achieved. These powerful panes known as KeepSafe Maximum glass are so strong, they have passed wind tests of over 135 Mph! Flying debris is no problem when it comes to hurricane proof glass. Even when the window has been shattered and broken, it still won't come loose from its frame so you don't have to worry about flying debris.

Don't bother with plywood panels, hurricane shutters or sketchy clips to cover up your windows during the hurricane season, hurricane windows are built to last through the strongest of storms and beyond. Call Gulf Coast Windows right now and learn about all of our hurricane windows today, so you can protect your home from future storm damages.

Security

Besides the powerful forces of Mother Nature that can do more than just ruin your day, there are the much more powerful forces of man. Burglaries are one of the biggest factors when it comes to home security because window panes are so easy to break and enter undetected. Because our hurricane windows are so strong, you can bet that they have the strength and durability to repeal criminals. Even when the glass panes have been smashed with a hammer, they still won't budge, keeping criminals at bay. Keep your family safe and your possessions yours by installing hurricane windows in your home or business.

Energy Efficiency

Durable and strong are just the start of owning hurricane windows. Because of their thickness, resistance to stress and layers of high tech polymers, hurricane windows from Gulf Coast Windows are very energy efficient. By preventing the harsh UV rays that strike your windows from entering the structure, they not only ensure that your energy costs remain lower, they also prevent damages from sunlight that can often fade furniture, carpets and paint. Keep your home cool in the summer, warm in the winter and your energy costs lower by installing hurricane windows.

Sound Control

When you live near a busy road, school or airport, you know it! Keep noise pollution outdoors and out of your home for good by installing hurricane windows from Gulf Coast Windows. Call us today for an estimate on the only windows you'll ever need and keep your sanctuary silent.

Eclipse season on Mars, so Curiosity took photos

(AP) ? NASA's Mars Curiosity rover took hundreds of photos of what on Earth is a rare event: a partial eclipse of the sun.

Two moons zip around the red planet, so eclipses are more common. Scientists say there's even somewhat of an eclipse season.

Curiosity turned its cameras skyward to watch chunks of the sun seemingly bitten away by Mars' moons in three different eclipses, starting last week and continuing Wednesday.

Texas A&M University scientist Mark Lemmon said these pictures will help scientists track the fate of the larger Martian moon, Phobos. In 10 to 15 million years, Phobos will get so close to Mars it will break up and crash into the planet.

On Friday, Curiosity will start making its first chemical tests of a rock.

Reindeer at risk from snow sport

Wild reindeer may face a new threat from the extreme sport of snow-kiting, a study has found.

Scientists modelled reindeer's fright responses to both snow-kiting and skiing in an alpine area of south Norway.

They found that reindeer were more afraid of snow-kiters because of the airborne kite.

The study recommends that controls are put on the sport to prevent harm to wild reindeer.

Snow-kiting is a new sport, similar to kite-surfing, in which the rider wears skis and is pulled along by a kite.

It is thought to be one of the fastest-growing recreational sports in Norway.

Amid growing concern among wildlife managers and politicians the study, which is published in the journal of Applied Animal Behaviour Science, assessed the potential effect of this activity on wild reindeer in the alpine area of Norefjell-Reinsj?fjell.

Scientists conducted experiments in which the reindeer were confronted by an approaching skier or snow-kiter.

They gathered data on the animals' reactions, such as distance from the skier or snow-kiter when the reindeer fled, how far they ran and how long the fright response lasted.

Using this information, the scientists were able to predict the likely effects of an increasing number of skiers and snow-kiters on the reindeer population.

They found that habitat and feeding time would decrease by up to 7.5% if the number of skiers reached 105. At that point, the reindeer would seek refuge away from the ski trails.

But in the case of snow-kiters, that reduction could be as high as 100% if the number of snow-kiters reached 241 travelling at 8.8km per hour, or 111 snow-kiters travelling at 20km per hour.

In addition, scientists observed that the size and airborne nature of the kite "was more frightening for the reindeer" than the presence of a skier.

Long fright responses by reindeer towards snow-kiters mean the sport could have "very negative population consequences" on the animals, according to the study.

Because of the greater range of a snow-kiter, as well as the kite's visibility over long distances, interactions with reindeer populations may also be more frequent for snow-kiting than for other alpine sports.

The research also recommended that ski trails are carefully planned and managed to minimise the combined effect of the two sports on reindeer.

There are currently no restrictions on the use of snow-kites in Norway.

BlackBerry T-Mobile service outage resolved

1 hr.

Research? In Motion said on Tuesday a service disruption that affected Internet browsing for some BlackBerry users on T-Mobile USA's network had been resolved.

T-Mobile, the fourth-biggest U.S. mobile service provider, earlier on Tuesday said some of its BlackBerry smartphone users were unable to use the device for emails or Internet browsing.

The partial service disruption was limited to customers of the BlackBerry 9900 and did not affect phone call services and text messaging, according to T-Mobile USA, a unit of Deutsche Telekom.

"RIM and T-Mobile worked closely together to identify the problem which has now been resolved," said a RIM spokesman in an email.

The outage did not appear to affect T-Mobile's bigger rivals Verizon Wireless and AT&T.

1 year on, Occupy is in disarray; spirit lives on

NEW YORK (AP) ? Occupy Wall Street began to disintegrate in rapid fashion last winter, when the weekly meetings in New York City devolved into a spectacle of fistfights and vicious arguments.

Punches were thrown and objects were hurled at moderators' heads. Protesters accused each other of being patriarchal and racist and domineering. Nobody could agree on anything and nobody was in charge. The moderators went on strike and refused to show up, followed in quick succession by the people who kept meeting minutes. And then the meetings stopped altogether.

In the city where the movement was born, Occupy was falling apart.

"We weren't talking about real things at that point," says Pete Dutro, a tattoo artist who used to manage Occupy's finances but became disillusioned by the infighting and walked away months ago. "We were talking about each other."

The trouble with Occupy Wall Street, a year after it bloomed in a granite park in lower Manhattan and spread across the globe, is that nobody really knows what it is anymore. To say whether Occupy was a success or a failure depends on how you define it.

Occupy is a network. Occupy is a metaphor. Occupy is still alive. Occupy is dead. Occupy is the spirit of revolution, a lost cause, a dream deferred.

"I would say that Occupy today is a brand that represents movements for social and economic justice," says Jason Amadi, a 28-year-old protester who now lives in Philadelphia. "And that many people are using this brand for the quest of bettering this world."

On Monday, a couple hundred protesters converged near the New York Stock Exchange to celebrate Occupy's anniversary, marking the day they began camping out in Zuccotti Park.

A handful were arrested after sitting on the sidewalk, but there was no sign of a planned "people's wall" on the streets surrounding the stock exchange.

Instead, protesters held a small meeting where they talked about the ills of Wall Street and corporate greed.

Marches and rallies in more than 30 cities around the world will commemorate the day.

About 300 people observing the anniversary marched Saturday. At least a dozen were arrested, mostly on charges of disorderly conduct, police said.

But the movement is now a shadow of its mighty infancy, when a group of young people harnessed the power of a disillusioned nation and took to the streets chanting about corporate greed and inequality.

Back then it was a rallying cry, a force to be reckoned with. But as the encampments were broken up and protesters lost a gathering place, Occupy in turn lost its ability to organize.

The movement had grown too large too quickly. Without leaders or specific demands, what started as a protest against income inequality turned into an amorphous protest against everything wrong with the world.

"We were there to occupy Wall Street," Dutro says. "Not to talk about every social ill that we have."

The community that took shape in Zuccotti Park still exists, albeit in a far less cohesive form. Occupiers mostly keep in touch online through a smattering of websites and social networks. There are occasional conference calls and Occupy-affiliated newsletters. Meetings are generally only convened to organize around specific events, like the much-hyped May Day event that ultimately fizzled last spring.

The movement's remaining $85,000 in assets were frozen, though fundraising continues.

"The meetings kind of collapsed under their own weight," explains Marisa Holmes, a 26-year-old protester among the core organizers who helped Occupy rise up last fall. "They became overly concerned with financial decisions. They became bureaucratic."

In other words, they became a combustible microcosm of the society that Occupiers had decided to abandon ? a new, equally flawed society with its own set of miniature hierarchies and toxic relationships. Even before the ouster at Zuccotti Park, the movement had been plagued with noise and sanitary problems, an inability to make decisions and a widening rift between the park's full-time residents and the movement's power players, most of whom no longer lived in the park.

"We've always said that we want a new society," Holmes says. "We're not asking anything of Wall Street. We don't expect anything in return."

Occupy organizers in other U.S. cities have also scattered to the winds in recent months. In Oakland, a metal fence surrounds the City Hall lawn that was the hub of protesters' infamous tear-gassed, riotous clashes with police. The encampment is gone, as are the thousands who ventured west to help repeatedly shut down one of the nation's largest ports.

"I don't think Occupy itself has an enormous future," says Dr. Mark Naison, a professor at Fordham University in New York City. "I think that movements energized by Occupy have an enormous future."

Across the nation, there have been protests organized in the name of ending foreclosure, racial inequality, stop and frisk, debt: You name it, Occupy has claimed it. Occupy the Bronx. Occupy the Department of Education. Occupy the Hood. Occupy the Hamptons.

Protesters opposing everything from liquor sales in Whiteclay, Neb., to illegal immigration in Birmingham, Ala., have used Occupy as a weapon to fight for their own causes. In Russia, opposition activists protesting President Vladimir Putin's re-election to a third term have held a series of Occupy-style protests. Young "indignados" in Spain are joining unions and public servants to rally against higher taxes and cuts to public education and health care.

"All around the world, that youthful spirit of revolt is alive and well," says Kalle Lasn, co-founder of Adbusters, the Canadian magazine that helped ignite the movement.

In New York, groups of friends who call themselves "affinity groups" still gather at each other's apartments for dinner to talk about the future of Occupy. A few weeks ago, about 50 Occupiers gathered in a basement near Union Square to plan the anniversary.

There were the usual flare-ups, with people speaking out of order and heckling the moderators. The group could not agree on whether to allow a journalist to take photographs. An older man hijacked the meeting for nearly 15 minutes with a long-winded rant about the NYPD's stop-and-frisk tactics.

A document called "The Community Agreement of Occupy Wall Street" was distributed that, among other outdated encampment-era rules, exhorted Occupiers not to touch each other's personal belongings and laid out rules about sleeping arrangements.

It is this sort of inward-facing thinking ? the focus on Occupiers, not the world they're trying to remake ? that saddens ex-protesters like Dutro, who wanted to stay focused on taking down Wall Street.

Hanging in the entryway to his Brooklyn apartment, like a relic of the past, is the first poster he ever brought down to Zuccotti Park. In black and gold lettering, painted on a piece of cardboard, the sign says: "Nobody got rich on their own. Wall St. thinks U-R-A-SUCKER."

He keeps it there as a reminder of what Occupy is really fighting for. Because despite his many frustrations, Dutro hasn't been able to stamp the Occupy anger out of his soul. Not yet.

On Sept. 17, he'll be down at Liberty Square again. And he'll be waiting, like the rest of the world, to see what happens next.

"We came into the park and had this really magical experience," he says. "It was a big conversation. It was where we all got to realize: 'I'm not alone.'"

5 Reasons America Is Better Off Now Than 4 ... - Top Finance Blog

Talk about timing. I started this blog in December 2008, just after Barack Obama had been elected president but before he took office. Since this is a finance blog and I was tracking things at that time, I can easily go back through the archives to see what was going on back then and compare it to now to see if the country is better off than it was back then. And I can do it impartially, although those who disagree with the president and don?t want him to win reelection will find some way to disagree anyway.

So be it; that?s what America is all about. Anyway, with what?s chronicled on this blog in reserve, I can give you 5 reasons why America is better off now that it was 4 years ago.

1. Job losses. Yes, the unemployment rate is still very high. We?ll get to that in a minute. Back in 2008 and early 2009, this country was losing hundreds of thousands of jobs a month. There were 693,000 jobs lost in December 2008. In the last week of January there were over 100,000 jobs lost; you can?t blame that on Obama since he?d just gotten into office. And there was talk about just letting the automobile makers declare bankruptcy and lay off tens of thousands more people; it was a scary time.

Instead, there was a stimulus package and a bailout of banks and that stemmed the tide of massive layouts and gave banks a chance to get their act together. Whether it really created a bunch of jobs or just saved some is immaterial; what happened is that many businesses got a sense of peace and the high layoff rates declined drastically within six months.

2. Unemployment. Now it?s time for unemployment. In November 2008 unemployment got to 9.5%; by January it was around 10.4%. As of August 2012 unemployment nationally is around 8.1%. Now, naysayers are saying that?s because a lot of people have dropped off the rolls and aren?t looking for jobs anymore. The truth is that?s always how it?s been. The unemployment figure has always been somewhat suspect because there are always people who don?t find jobs within the time they were on unemployment, and some of that happened when there weren?t unemployment extensions. So, using the same lousy data, there?s still been an improvement of 2.3%; just the facts.

3. Bank closures. When the stimulus package to save banks went through, it was only the mega banks that got help. By the beginning of September 2009 there were 84 banks that had been closed, and many of these were large banking systems. By September 14th of 2012 there have been 41 banks that have closed. This doesn?t say that the economy is perfect, but it?s improved a lot.

4. Housing market. Back in 2009, more than 2.8 million homes were foreclosed upon. Not only that, but both Freddie Mac & Fannie Mae were booted from the NYSE. Housing prices were dropping an average of at least 50% across the country; in Florida, Arizona and California, some properties lost 75% of their value.

In 2012, foreclosures are still around but nowhere close to what they were. States that were in great distress are starting to rebound as housing prices are starting to go up, and the building of new homes has started to occur again. Sure, interest rates are still very low, but how many people are complaining about that?

Inventory is also down as home buying has scooped up a lot of what was existing out there. And one more thing; some of those people who got kicked out of their homes via foreclosures will be getting a lot of their money back because of the government working to get settlements for many of them, supposedly as many as 500,000 families. Frankly, I see that as a win.

5. Health care. Yeah, I know, this one is debatable by some people. But the reality is that by the time this thing is enacted less than 10% of people won?t have insurance, but everyone will have the ability to get insurance.

And some of the benefits have already kicked in, and there?s almost no one mad at them. Pre-existing conditions have long been a major issue for everyone (including me back in the 80?s), and the ability to help cover young people to the age of 26 has to be a godsend.

Being in health care finance, I have to say that this is a great thing for medical facilities, even if some of them are trying to scare people because no one?s really sure how reimbursements will be yet.

But bad debt will decrease, fewer people will have to declare bankruptcy because of medical debt (you did know that 61% of those that declare bankruptcy have a large medical bill that they owe, right?), the condition that insurance companies have to spend at least 82% of your premium to pay medical claims, and the government?s push towards trying to make sure frivolous tests aren?t being performed (something that was the government?s fault to begin with), there should be all sorts of savings all around.

6. Stock Market I know I said only 5 reasons but leaving this one out wouldn?t make much sense. Just before President Obama took office, the stock market was in a free fall. In January 2009, the market was in danger of falling below 6,500, and it barely missed that figure. Last Friday the Dow closed at just under 13,600, which is near the highest close in history. I?m just sayin??

There you are, six reasons, all of them legit, none of them slanted because of party lines or politics. Still, people will believe what they want to believe, facts or not.
