Flying Into the Light: Self Esteem and Self Worth

This is a great conversation I had with a client yesterday.

When we first started working together more than a year ago, he said that he suffered from low self-esteem and that this was one of the issues he wanted to work on.? Unsurprisingly, this lack of self-esteem turned out to be related to bad/abusive relationship experiences he'd had, and we've healed a lot of that.? Still, I thought it was time to ask him how he was doing, overall, with the question of self esteem.? I believe that it's important to check in periodically and see how an issue is improving--or not improving--globally.? This is how I can assess if there is something that needs to change in my own approach--do we need to do some EMDR around past negative events, do we need to go into a more somatic process, is it a spiritual/meaning of life/existential issue, etc.

So, he said something very interesting:? "My self esteem still isn't that great but my self worth has come up a lot."

"That's great.? What would you say the difference is?"? I asked, intrigued.? This appears to me to be a very sophisticated and accurate way to talk about it.? This client is very intelligent (far more than he used to think he is, so coming to an awareness of that has been really helpful for his self worth, for sure.)

He said, "Self esteem...it changes a lot depending on who I'm around, how I look that day, what other people might think of me.? Self worth doesn't change that much. I know now that I'm a good person and deserve more from my relationships than I used to think."

I thought this was great.? Self worth is like the core; a sense of being a deserving human who rightly occupies a place in the world, gives and receives love, is treated and treats others with dignity and respect, is effective and capable, competent and strong.? It's the core.? Self esteem, well, it changes; it might be better on the days you have on an awesome pair of jeans, or a good hair day, or you get a smile from a stranger.??

So yeah.? I think the core of good healing is the self worth. I would like to see self esteem come up too, but if the self worth is gaining ground and growing, that's the most important thing and likely a lot of the self esteem stuff will follow it.? Incidentally, how awesome is it for a man to openly say that this is part of what he wants for himself out of healing?? I told him that one of the reasons people love him (because they really do) is that he's brave.? He gets out there and deals with himself and thinks about things, and people admire that even though it scares the pants off them initially.? I think it's hard for a lot of men to even admit they have self-esteem issues much less get assistance with them.? It takes a courageous guy to face that one down and work with it.? I love it when the myth busters show up in my life!

At least 50 flooded houses destroyed by NYC fire

NEW YORK (AP) ? A huge fire destroyed at least 50 homes in a flooded neighborhood in the New York City borough of Queens.

More than 190 firefighters were trying to contain the blaze in the Breezy Point section and two people suffered minor injuries, a fire department spokesman said.

The fire was reported around 11 p.m. Monday in an area flooded by the superstorm that began sweeping through the city earlier, officials said.

Firefighters told WABC-TV that the water was chest high on the street, and they had to use a boat to make rescues. They said in one apartment home, about 25 people were trapped in an upstairs unit, and the two-story home next door was ablaze and setting fire to the apartment's roof. Firefighters climbed an awning to get to the trapped people and took them downstairs to a boat in the street.

Video footage of the scene shows a hellish swath of tightly packed homes fully engulfed in orange flames as firefighters hauled hoses while sloshing in ankle-high water. Many homes appeared completely flattened by the wind-whipped flames.

The neighborhood sits on the Rockaway peninsula jutting into the Atlantic Ocean.

In September, the beachfront neighborhood was struck by a tornado that hurled debris in the air, knocked out power and startled residents who once thought of twisters as a Midwestern phenomenon.

Guide to Most Popular ETFs - Zacks.com - Zacks Investment Research

The ETF industry has come a long way from the time when the ETFs were first launched as investment tools to gain exposure to different asset classes. Since then, many ETFs came into existence, of which many could not survive in the industry and had to be shut down. So what could be the possible reason behind those ETFs which were launched only to be shut down later?

We can say that ETFs are more about numbers like AUM, volume, number of holdings, etc. So, which one of these numbers keeps an ETF going? Is it asset under management which indicates whether the fund will continue to exist or its average daily volume? (Ten Biggest U.S. Equity Market ETFs)

Undoubtedly volume is an important consideration in the investment process, especially for traders who get in and out of a particular security very frequently. For these traders, high volume levels can help keep bid-ask spreads low and thus reduce the total cost of trading. (Guide to the 25 Most Liquid ETFs)

But it should be noted that a fund?s very existence depends to a large extent on its asset under management. Generally, for a fund asset under management of or over $100 million work as a threshold for any sponsor?s profitability. While big fund houses may be able to run their ETFs with low AUM for years, it becomes really difficult for small fund house.

Although AUM and volume both play crucial roles in any fund?s existence, it is finally the return from the fund which influences any investor?s decision. Still, the funds that have managed to attract a large amount of assets indicate that they are popular with the investors due to their past performance and expectations for future performance. Investors looking to invest in ETFs with very high AUMs (more than 30 billion) as criteria have the following options available.

SPDR S&P 500 (SPY)

Initiated in January 1993, SPY is the king in the ETF world, with the highest asset under management. It manages an asset base of $118.4 billion. The most popular fund among investors, SPY seeks to invest its heavy asset base in a basket of 500 stocks and trades with an average trading volume of about 135 million shares. The fund also has an edge in expenses as it charges a fee of just 0.09% annually. (Guide to the 25 Cheapest ETFs)

The weighting towards the top 10 holdings is also moderate as just 21.4% of the huge asset base goes towards them. This implies that the fund?s asset allocation is not limited to the top 10 holdings but is spread out among other companies as well. ?Apple Inc. (AAPL) takes the top position in the top 10 holdings list with an asset allocation of 4.9%. Among others, the fund does not invest more than 3.3% in any one holding.

Among sector allocation, the fund gives double-digit allocation to the top 5 sectors with information technology being the most preferred sector in the list with an asset allocation of 20.1%.

Vanguard MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (VWO)

This Vanguard ETF looks to tap the growing emerging markets which not only have greater growth potential but also lower correlation with their developed market counterparts. (Three Overlooked Emerging Market ETFs)

This ETF tracks the MSCI Emerging Markets Index in order to provide exposure to a basket of stocks across various developing nations. The product has proven to be extremely popular with investors.

The proof is in the $67.1 billion under management in the fund, while trading volume is more than 18 million shares a day. Also, the cost appears to be minimal at 20 basis points, especially when compared to other emerging market ETFs.

In terms of a portfolio, VWO provides access to 902 securities in its basket and does not allocate more than 3.9% to any one stock. This suggests that the product is well diversified from an individual security perspective and is unlikely to face company specific risk. (Three Emerging Market ETFs to Limit BRIC Exposure)

With regard to country exposure, China takes the top spot at 17.3% of assets, followed by 14.4% in Korea, 15.2% in Brazil, and a 10.7% allocation to Taiwan.

SPDR Gold Shares (GLD)

For a bullion-backed approach to gold ETF investing, investors can look to SPDR Gold Shares. GLD is the ETF which is backed by physical metal and holds the metal in the form of bullion or ingots.

Investing through GLD in gold represents a cost-effective and suitable mode for investors. It is expected that the transaction costs for buying and selling the shares will be lower than purchasing, storing and insuring physical gold for most investors (Has The Junior Gold Mining ETF Lost Its Luster?).

This ETF is designed to track the spot price of Gold bullion. GLD ?is an ETF rich in AUM as it has $75.9 billion asset under management and is one of the most liquid options available in gold ETF investing trading with volumes of 7 million a day. The fund charges a fee of 40 basis points annually.

iShares MSCI EAFE Index Fund ETF (EFA)

For investors seeking a broad exposure to developed markets around the world outside of the U.S. and Canada should invest in EFA. EFA tracks the MSCI EAFE Index and provides exposure to companies specifically in Europe, Australia, and the Far East (Seven Biggest International Equity ETFs).

This product manages an asset base of $36.7 billion and is an extremely liquid option available to investors as traded volume on a normal day is more than 14 million. So this product is rich in both AUM and volume.

The fund seeks to invest this asset base in a large basket of 926 stocks and is immune to company specific risk with just 13.4% of assets in the top 10 holdings. Among sector breakdown, the fund is a bit tilted towards financials in which it put in 23.4% of the asset base. Among others the fund does not invest more than 12.3% in any stock.

From a country perspective, United Kingdom takes the top spot at 22.8% of assets, just edging out Japan. The fund charges an expense ratio of 34 basis points on an annual basis.

MSCI Emerging Markets Index Fund (EEM)

For a broad play on the emerging market space, EEM presents a compelling choice to the investors looking to tap the emerging markets (Get True Emerging Market Exposure With These Three ETFs).

The fund managed to build an impressive asset base of $37.4 billion and is also rich in volume trading with volumes of more than 36 million on a normal day. The ETF charges investors 67 basis points in fees for its services. .

It represents a solid pick for long-term investors as it has a well diversified portfolio that doesn?t put more than 3.8% in any one security. Sector exposure, however, is tilted towards financials, information technology, energy and materials where each of them accounts for double-digit allocation.

For countries, China takes the top spot at just about 17% of the total, followed by a 15% allocation to South Korea and a 13% holding in Brazilian firms.

iShares S&P 500 Index Fund (IVV)

Investors seeking for exposure in the large capitalization sector of the U.S. equity market or S&P 500 should look to invest in IVV. IVV trades with an asset base of $32.8 billion.

This produces a product which is home to a large basket of 502 large cap stocks with a spread out holding pattern as it just allocates 21.3% to the top 10 holdings. Apple takes the top spot in the top 10 holdings closely followed by Exxon Mobil and General Electric.

The fund does not appear to be biased towards any particular sector and gives double-digit allocation to almost all the sectors except the last four. The fund also has an edge in expenses as it just charges 9 basis points annually.

Why Bill Gates is right to be excited about online education ...

[pressportal.co.za]

Bill Gates recently predicted that the web will be the place to learn in the near future. It will be "better than any single university" he stated, believing "place-based" learning will be less important going forward (Techonomy Conference). In Africa alone, 48% of learners rely on cellphones, 36% on shared computing resources and 74% on ICT for classroom teaching to improve the quality of education (eLearning Africa 2012 Report). And with rapid advances in technology and more and more people with access to the internet, it's not surprising that the need for eLearning is on the rise.

N(e)W Learning

Although eLearning is a fundamentally new way of learning, no one could have anticipated its exponential growth. The rate of enrolment for this mode of learning far exceeds that for its traditional counterpart. The flexibility and convenience of being able to study anywhere, anytime has transformed the way people choose to learn.

In the early days eLearning was approached merely as an attempt to transfer the classroom experience to the online world. In the interim, however, it has evolved into a medium all of its own.

Gone are the days of sitting behind a computer screen staring at 14 hours of streaming video until you're bleary-eyed and brain-dead. Present-day eLearning is all about the b(y)te-sized chunks of relevant information that collectively form the integrated and holistic knowledge base that is the only pathway to true, practical wisdom. It is no longer the stagnant absorption of masses of (often irrelevant) information, but a complex and stimulating learning experience.

Tech savvy learners know the difference between valuable information and waffling printer fodder, demanding short, powerful messages that are easy to digest.

It is a revolution in the transfer of content without sacrificing context. While it is not immune to the usual challenges of delivery, it is still a self-paced system for getting core concepts, disciplines and learning areas across to students.

The concept that "understanding learning styles is one of the keys to successful behaviour management [and] if you can appeal to the learning styles of all of the pupils in your classroom then you have a much greater chance of engaging all your students in their learning" (Teaching-Strategies-For-Classroom-Discipline.com) is widely gaining acceptance amongst pedagogues of all types. eLearning, more than any other medium, enables both learners and educators to embrace this truth. This is because the formats available are virtually limitless.

eLearning is most effective when it is a form of people-centred learning. That is where many organisations get it wrong. They think it is just about making content available online, but forget that learning is a directed experience.

To some extent, eLearning is harder work than traditional classroom-based learning. This is why employers are increasingly acknowledging the value of students who have obtained their qualifications through distance-based institutions ? they see it as evidence of determination, self-reliance and the ability to think laterally. The classroom provides guidance whilst eLearning forces the learner to look beyond what is on the screen and find application.

Certification of learning will always be its most important aspect if the learner aims to convince others that s/he truly has the knowledge and competence required. All knowledge on the Internet may be free or reasonably cheap, but it is not necessarily always valuable or even accurate. Course accreditation is therefore vitally important and potential students should pay careful attention to establish if the eLearning programme is accredited, like those qualifications offered by Regenesys Business School. For employers, credibility is non-negotiable. It is important that a structured learning process creates a cognitive learning experience that enables the end-user to practise the competency or skill in question.

The eLearning revolution recognises the changing world in which we live. It has been a long time since humanity emerged from the dark ages, where information was an exclusive commodity reserved for the rich to further entrench their power over the impoverished. The modern world has vast repositories of information accessible to absolutely everyone. In this day and age, it is not s/he who merely has knowledge who has the power; it is s/he who knows how to use that information who has it.

The reality is that the world is changing so fast that traditional information-transfer methods have become hopelessly inadequate. If these media were our sole option, information would become obsolete before it even reached the learner. And the most important change agent needed for ICT enhanced learning and training is the Government (eLearning Africa 2012 Report).

Every day there is innovation in every field. However, discipline-based knowledge and inflexive and reflexive knowledge is still paramount for organisational and pedagogic success. "Learning how to learn" (as study guru, Tony Buzan puts it), learning how to find information and learning how to use it remain fundamental skills.

We have to become good at learning because it is increasingly aligned to how well we are able to perform. When you join a large company, you typically spend 100-200 hours learning their way of doing things. Those of us who are able to hit the ground running will have an incalculable advantage over those who are slow on the uptake. And no eLearning graduate makes it to graduation without having mastered this invaluable skill.

Kids' mountain bike program likely the first of many in Old Town ...

Ten children in Old Town learned the joys of mountain biking during a monthlong program for grades 4-8 that ran mid-September through mid-October.

The program was made possible by a first-of-its-kind collaboration of three Maine-based organizations: Old Town Recreation, Maine Winter Sports Center and the Bicycle Coalition of Maine.

?They were very excited to just go out and experience the outdoors,? said Kevin McPhee, director of Old Town Recreation, which hosted the program. ?We have a river trail here in the Old Town-Orono area that goes along the Stillwater River. It?s just a beautiful bike trial, and they were able to experience that on a couple of occasions.?

Biking in the mud was their favorite part.

?They usually came back and had mud up their backs and huge smiles,? McPhee said. ?Their parents would come to pick them up and just shake their heads and smile.?

Healthy Hometowns, the community development program of the Maine Winter Sports Center, provided mountain bikes and helmets for participants, as well as training and curriculum for leaders.

?The focus of this program was on experiencing the lifelong, active outdoor pursuit of mountain biking,? said Central Maine Healthy Hometowns coach Lauren Jacobs. ?Kids had a blast exploring the trails, getting muddy and becoming skilled bikers.?

In April, L.L.Bean announced a $1 million donation to Healthy Hometowns to expand the program into a year-round, statewide effort. This donation coincides with L.L.Bean?s mission to get more children outdoors during their 100th anniversary year and beyond.

?In the past, Healthy Hometowns has been primarily cross-country ski-oriented and mostly in the County, up in Aroostook,? Jacobs said. ?With the funding in April, we can go statewide and year-round. This is the first time we?ve had equipment to use in other regions.?

The funding is providing staff, training and resources for Healthy Hometowns expand its focus to outdoor activities such as paddling, hiking, mountain biking, orienteering and camping.

So far, the donation enabled Healthy Hometowns to purchase 20 mountain bikes, three boat trailers of kayaks, and expand their ski collection to approximately 1,500 sets of skis. The program ?coaches? have started spreading out across the state, and the equipment supply will continue to grow over the next three years, Jacobs said.

The 10 children who participated in the Old Town mountain bike program gained skills and confidence through riding on local trails and fields and engaging in a variety of games and activities used to teach bike handling, shifting, braking, safety and navigating obstacles.

The Bicycle Coalition of Maine, a statewide cycling advocacy group, supported the initiative with a safety program for participants and program leadership by a coalition employee.

?Participants markedly improved their biking skills while getting great exercise and getting the opportunity to experience the great Maine outdoors as it was meant to be enjoyed,? McPhee said.

During the summer, Healthy Hometowns and Old Town Recreation worked together to provide kayaking and biking opportunities to summer camp participants. And this winter, the two organizations will work together for the third year to offer a youth cross-country ski program in conjunction with the Penobscot Valley Ski Club.

?This will be an ongoing effort,? McPhee said. ?We look forward to doing this spring, summer, fall and winter. We look forward to partnering with them each season to provide a different activity.?

Healthy Hometowns trailers filled with cross-country skis and snowshoes will travel throughout the state all winter to give children the chance to experience winter sports. Several schools in the Bangor area have booked the equipment, including schools in Winterport, Hampden, Bangor and Dover-Foxcroft.

?We are really focused on winter right now, planning winter sports, getting out calendars filled up and getting ready to do our ski weeks,? Jacobs said. ?But it won?t be long before we start thinking about spring and getting programming lined up. We already have a couple of requests ? Milo has already scheduled the mountain bikes for their outing club members for some time in May.?

2nd hearing set on bid to unseal Romney testimony

CANTON, Mass. (AP) ? A Massachusetts probate judge will hold another hearing Thursday before deciding whether to unseal testimony that GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney gave in the divorce case of Staples founder Tom Stemberg.

Ex-wife Maureen Stemberg Sullivan appeared in court Wednesday with lawyer Gloria Allred. They said they did not object to a Boston Globe motion to lift an impoundment order on Romney's testimony in the case from the early 1990s.

Attorneys said Romney's testimony dealt with financial matters, though they did not elaborate. Staples was founded with backing from Romney's firm, Bain Capital. Stemberg has been a surrogate for Romney and spoke on the former Massachusetts governor's behalf at the GOP convention.

"You have expert testimony about an investment that a presidential candidate made," Globe attorney Jonathan Albano told Judge Jennifer Ulwick on Wednesday. He said the public has a right to know what Romney said. Allred disputed the contention that Romney testified as an expert.

Attorneys for Romney and Staples asked the judge for more time to review two booklets of testimony Allred produced.

Stemberg's attorney said he had only been able to review about 20 pages. It wasn't clear if the booklets were all Romney testimony or included testimony from others.

Romney attorney Robert Jones said Romney would like time to review the entire transcript but does not anticipate objecting. He asked a judge not to delay the hearing beyond one day.

"We're in a little bit of a spin cycle now," Jones said. "The longer this goes on, the more speculation there will be."

Jones also issued a statement.

"This is a decades-old divorce case in which Mitt Romney provided testimony as to the value of a company," he said. "He has no objection to letting the public see that testimony."

Stemberg's lawyer, Brian Leary, said there was nothing salacious in the testimony he had seen but acknowledged he only had 20 pages. He described the divorce as incredibly contentious and urged the judge to look at "what's really going on behind the scenes."

He added: "This is in many ways much ado about nothing."

NHL lockout latest and links, information on three NHLPA proposals, EA Sports NHL '13 review and Rangers news

The NHL and players? association had no further labor negotiations scheduled as of Tuesday morning, despite a league-imposed deadline of end of Thursday to reach a new collective bargaining agreement in order to save the full 82-game schedule.
?
But we have to keep busy on the Blueshirts Blog, so I?ve cobbled together links to some of the top recent lockout coverage, some Rangers prospect news, and even a review of EA Sports? NHL '13 video game (the only NHL hockey on my TV set this October).
?
Feel free to comment at the bottom of my post with lockout, NHL and Ranger questions or suggestions that I can respond to either here or on my Twitter account @NYDNRangers.
?
WAX ON, WAX OFF ? LOCK IN, LOCK OUT
Bill Daly from the league and Steve Fehr from the union spoke during the weekend about revenue definitions and clarifications, but their contact behind the scenes does not change the fact that a deal by end of Thursday looks bleak at best.
?
Take NHLPA executive director Don Fehr?s quote from this interview with Canadian press agency QMI, reported by former Blueshirts Blog video star Bruce Garrioch at the Ottawa Sun, when asked whether he is hopeful the sides will be able to sit down and hammer out an agreement:
?
?We?re available at any time,? Fehr told QMI. ?Where the commissioner left (the negotiations on Thursday) was: ?(Don?t call) unless you?re prepared to tell me you?ll accept everything that?s on the table ? (or) if you want you can call me about that ?make whole? provision. There?s no point. What am I supposed to do if I believe him??
?
The NHL seems not only to want the players to make massive concessions, but also to do so within the framework of the league?s proposal ? not through a counteroffer from the union that restructures the landscape. So the league shot down all three of the NHLPA's proposals last Thursday.
?
It?s important also to remember that there is a game of egos and private frustrations ongoing behind the scenes, one in which Don Fehr and NHL commissioner Gary Bettman play huge roles, as I wrote on Sunday.
?
On Tuesday morning, Renaud Lavoie of RDS in Canada reported that the NHL gave owners and general managers permission to talk to their players about the league?s last collective bargaining proposal without alerting the NHLPA. Steve Fehr, the union?s special counsel, responded to Lavoie: ?Most owners are not allowed to attend bargaining meetings. No owners are allowed to speak to the media about the bargaining. It is interesting that they are secretly unleashed to talk to the players about the meetings the players can attend but the owners cannot.?
?
While the frustrating public relations battle raged on, Mark Spector of SportsNet in Canada ? who has no problem defending the league on occasion if the information dictates he should do so ? wrote a scathing column saying Bettman should step down as commissioner after these negotiations, then another column explaining the pressures Bettman is facing during this crucial week and beyond.
?
In bad news for the players? association, meanwhile, Nashville Predators forward Sergei Kostitsyn was caught telling Russian newspaper Sport-Express that ?it would be better (for the players) if the lockout continues.? This type of comment does not convince the NHL the union is interested in good faith bargaining, even if they actually are.
?
Kostitsyn also said playing in Europe could be better because he ?couldn?t get used to (the American) mentality. They are totally different people from us.? Then he called Columbus the ?gloomiest city in the U.S., a comment which I would love to throw up to former-Ranger/now-Blue Jacket Brandon Dubinsky for a response during the season if it?s called for.
?
Finally, four links to lockout stories you should read and writers you should follow consistently, if you don?t do so already:
?
1. Elliotte Friedman, CBC Sports: ?30 Thoughts: NHL lockout enters crucial week?
?
2. Nick Cotsonika, Yahoo! Spors: ?NHL and NHLPA wasting time with scare tactics and PR stunts instead of settling CBA?
?
3. Michael Grange, SportsNet: ?Darkest before dawn?
?
4. Jesse Spector, The Sporting News: Playing devil?s advocate ? ?Don?t fear the shortened season, NHL; embrace it?
?
McILRATH RECOVERING
The Rangers announced last Friday that 2010 first-round pick and defensive prospect Dylan McIlrath had a ?follow-up? procedure on his left knee and that it went ?very well.?
?
?We are happy with the results,? the club said in a statement. ?Dylan has not been cleared to return to the ice yet, but he is making great progress.?
?
McIlrath dislocated his left knee cap on June 27 when he collided with now-Connecticut Whale forward Kyle Jean at the Rangers? development camp in Greenburgh, then underwent surgery on July 6.
?
Watch the Rangers? Jim Cerny interview McIlrath on Blueshirts United for more information on the youngster?s health.
?
NHL ?13 ? FEAR THE STAAL SLAPPER, NASH BEEFS UP THE POWER PLAY, SPEED KILLS
EA Sports? newest hockey release allows gamers to create the Ultimate Team, rewrite or relive great hockey moments, be their own pros, or go full-tilt on the highly-involved GM Connected mode. All of these features are excellent features, but I?m simple when it comes to sports games, and all I care about is: can I play the sport realistically? Is it challenging? And how accurately are the players portrayed?
?
By my standards, NHL ?13 passes the test with flying colors. Most impressive is its True Performance Skating feature, which incorporates real-world physics to accurately portray how skaters stride, gain and lose momentum, turn and react to contact.
?
Most skaters in real life, for example, slow down when an opponent forces them to change direction or turn. That happens to puck-carriers in NHL ?13. But smooth skaters and stick-handlers such as the Flyers? Claude Giroux, who graces the games? cover, are able to better maintain high speeds when juking and changing direction. That explains why I was able to weave in from the left blue line to the high slot around two Penguins defensemen and zip a wrister past Marc-Andre Fleury, as Giroux would.
?
The Rangers are portrayed fairly accurately: Marian Gaborik is the most skilled offensive player and most fun to play with, since he zips around slow-footed defensemen. Carl Hagelin is incredibly effective also, due to his speed. Brad Richards is the most deft passer. Perhaps the best offensive weapon for the Rangers in this game is Marc Staal?s slap shot. He unloads rockets from the point and high slot. Fellow defensemen Ryan McDonagh and Michael Del Zotto are fast and skilled, and McDonagh is physical riding guys off the puck. And you?ll love to hear this, Ranger fans: Rick Nash routinely bodies defensemen off their positions in front of the net on the power play, improving the Blueshirts? man advantage. I know, you can?t wait to see if that will happen in real life. We all want this lockout to end.
?
The goalie controls also are much more realistic and detailed, but I don?t trust myself playing net for a full 60 minutes unless it?s in the backyard. Maybe if this lockout keeps dragging on, I?ll call up Henrik Lundqvist and see if he?ll play a few virtual games in goal.
?
I?ll bet he will resent the fact that NHL ?13 insults his glove hand big time, even after a Vezina Trophy-winning season.
?
Find more information on NHL ?13 and buy the game on the EA Sports site.

Schools: Westborough golf takes third at sectional

Marlborough?s Jason Short finished third individually with a 74, while state-qualifiers Mike Rodenbush and Nic Ross led the Westborough golf team to third place in the Division 1 Central sectional at the par-74 Gardner Municipal Golf Course.

Rodenbush and Ross join Short as individual state qualifiers.

The Division 1 state championship tournament will be held Monday at the Norton Country Club starting at 10 a.m.

Westborough freshman Jeff Arnold just missed qualifying, finishing tied for 11th with a 78.

Marlborough finished sixth (329) as Sam Voss was the next finisher for the Panthers tied for 28th with an 84. Algonquin followed in seventh led by Connor Henderson, who was tied for 16th with an 80, and Tyler Hatton, who was tied for 24th with an 83.

LONDON (AP) ? The BBC chief says allegations about decades of sexual abuse by its longtime TV host Jimmy Savile ? and the broadcaster's failure to stop him ? constitute a "very grave" crisis for the venerable organization.

Director-general George Entwistle told British lawmakers on Tuesday that it is too early to say whether sexual abuse was endemic within Britain's publicly funded national broadcaster in previous decades.

But, he said, "there's no question in my mind that what we now know happened is a very, very grave matter indeed."

Entwistle said the BBC was investigating historical allegations of sexual abuse or harassment against "between eight and 10" past and present employees, as it investigates whether Savile was at the heart of a wider pedophile ring within the corporation.

Entwistle's testimony before the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee comes a day after the BBC aired a powerful TV documentary about the corporation's role in the expanding sex abuse scandal around Savile, who died a year ago at age 84.

Since Savile's death, scores of women and several men have come forward to say the entertainer ? a longtime host of music and children's programs ? abused them when they were children or teenagers. Police have identified more than 200 potential victims.

The BBC, one of the world's largest and most respected broadcasters, is under fire for failing to stop the abuse and for pulling a "Newsnight" expose on Savile from TV schedules at the last minute in December.

The sex allegations were later aired on the rival ITV network.

The head of the BBC's "Newsnight" program, Peter Rippon, has left his job pending an investigation of his decision to scrap the Savile story.

The BBC documentary on Monday night, which was watched by more than 5 million people, presented the unusual spectacle of BBC journalists grilling their own bosses about why the piece had been dropped.

Entwistle has been in the BBC's top job for just a month after years in senior news and current affairs roles.

The U.K. lawmakers' committee may also want to question his predecessor, Mark Thompson, who led the organization at the time the "Newsnight" report was yanked. Thompson was appointed chief executive of the New York Times Co. in August and is due to take up the post next month.

Few public figures have had as spectacular a fall from grace as Savile, who was knighted for his charity fundraising and praised on his death as a popular if eccentric entertainer.

Since the ITV report earlier this month, his family has removed and destroyed his gravestone, and two charities named after him have announced they will close.

It is not just the BBC that is under fire. Schools and hospitals associated with Savile's charity work stand accused of letting him abuse young people during visits, perhaps fearful that speaking out would cut off their access to his prodigious charity fundraising.

And state prosecutors have acknowledged that they investigated four abuse allegations against Savile in 2009 but did not press charges.

"There is no question that what Jimmy Savile did and the way the BBC behaved ... will raise questions of trust for us and reputation for us," Entwistle told the lawmakers. "This is a gravely serious matter and one cannot look back at it with anything other than horror."

Top BBC editor steps aside during Savile probe

LONDON (AP) ? A top BBC editor stepped aside Monday while the broadcaster reviews a decision to pull the plug on a segment about sexual abuse allegations against a beloved U.K. children's television star.

The editor, Peter Rippon of the prominent "Newsnight" program, had not been forthcoming in his explanation about why the segment on Jimmy Savile did not run, the BBC said in a statement. The broadcaster said he is stepping down immediately while the matter is investigated.

The respected British broadcaster's decision has damaged its reputation and led to accusations it was covering up the crimes of one of its biggest stars, who died last year at the age of 84 after a long career in children's television.

Savile's actions are also being investigated by police and other agencies. Police say there may be more than 200 potential victims of the entertainer, the longtime host of "Top of the Pops" and "Jim'll Fix It," recognized for his garish track suits and platinum hair.

Rippon is the first BBC figure directly blamed for the broadcaster's failure to properly report on abuse claims.

The BBC says Rippon's explanation of his decision in a blog post earlier was "inaccurate or incomplete in some respects."

The BBC is facing criticism for providing different explanations for pulling the December segment that would have lifted the veil on Savile's abusive history, which had been rumored but not reported on at the time.

Prime Minister David Cameron said Monday it is important that investigations proceed and said the BBC had changed its story regarding its handling of the Savile story.

"We have to get to the bottom of what happened," he said. "These are serious questions."

The BBC Trust, the corporation's governing body, said it was deeply concerned that there had been "inaccuracies in the BBC's own description of what happened in relation to the Newsnight investigation."

BBC is publicly funded through its license fees and various commercial enterprises; it enjoys a large degree of independence from government but is subject to legislation passed by Parliament.

It used Savile for many years despite rumors about his activity.

The BBC is set to air its own investigation of its failure to report on Savile's sexual abuses Monday night on the "Panorama" show.

On the show set for broadcast Monday, BBC correspondents claim the Savile segment was pulled because of pressure from senior management.

In a statement released Monday, the BBC cited three problems with Rippon's initial statements about why the segment was not aired.

The BBC said Rippon's blog indicated that Newsnight staff had no evidence against the BBC when in fact there were allegations that some of the abuse happened on BBC premises.

It also faulted Rippon for saying that all the abuse victims interviewed by the program had told police about the abuse, when in some cases the women had not done so, meaning that police were "not aware of all the allegations" against Savile.

In addition, BBC said Rippon had indicated that there was no evidence that anyone working at the Duncroft school was aware of allegations that Savile had abused girls there, when in fact there were indications that "some of the Duncroft staff knew or may have known about the abuse."

do you believe in overtraining? - Health, Fitness, and Sports

That philosophically is right. However, in real life, you can be "overtrained" and feel like crap. As far as doing more the next day, I don't think it really works like that. I personally feel regularity is more needed. It's better to just do SOMETHING on the days you feel like crap for whatever reason, than do nothing at all and then try to make it up the next day. You need the regularity as you're trying to force your body to adapt to stress placed on it. I would say it's better to have regular exercise than a sort of binge and purge kind of mentality. So on the days you don't feel like, I don't know, squatting heavy or something, do like, shoulder flies and curls instead that day, then the next day when you feel hotter, then go squat heavy.

5 things that could sink Windows 8

14 hrs.

The Windows?8 launch is finally upon us, and I guarantee you there are a lot of nervous people in Redmond right now. How could they not be?

You?re about to launch a new version of your operating system that is such a radical departure from what PC users have come to expect that it should be called "Windows We Hope You?re Ready for Something Really Different." Sheer inertia is certainly a concern. After all, the Live Tiles, panoramic Modern-style interface and new tools like the Charms menu all require a learning curve. But that?s not the biggest challenge Microsoft?faces. These are.

1. Hardware is too pricey
One of the biggest reasons ultrabooks haven?t sold as well as Intel and its partners expected is that prices haven?t come down fast enough. You can finally find some in the $699 range, but that?s still about $200 more than the typical budget laptop.

Now, shoppers will be asked to pony up $1,100 to $1,200 to enjoy touch-based convertibles like the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga, Sony VAIO Duo 11 and Dell XPS 12. Intel shared with us recently that its own studies show that consumers are willing to pay $150 to $200 more for touch, but I?m not sure that will fly in a down economy and a holiday season dominated by the cheap iPad mini, Kindle Fire and Nexus 7.

Windows RT devices like Microsoft?s Surface are more affordable at $499, the same as the iPad. But opting for the Touch Cover keyboard (the accessory being touted in Microsoft?s ads) brings the price to $599.

Windows 8-powered hybrids like the $749 Acer Iconia W510 (with keyboard) and Samsung Ativ Smart PC 500T (I swear I?m not making that name up) don?t have the same sexy industrial design as the Surface, but their Atom processors make these devices more versatile because users can run traditional desktop apps. You can get the W510 without a keyboard for a reasonable $499.

[MORE: Top 10 Windows 8 Hybrids]

2. Windows 8 vs. Windows RT confusion
Shoppers will have a tough time telling the difference between the two flavors of new Windows devices on shelves this holiday season, because they both feature the same slick Live Tile interface. But there is a huge difference between the two platforms.

In a nutshell, Windows 8 PCs can run any app downloaded from the Windows Store as well as all desktop applications. Windows RT tablets and hybrids (powered by ARM processors) will be limited to Windows Store apps and Microsoft?s Office 2013, even though you?ll still be able to access the desktop for things like transferring files?off a USB drive.

Sounds like a pretty simple delineation, but as The Verge proved with some undercover testing, Microsoft?s own store employees don?t know the difference between the two operating systems. Microsoft responded to this eye-opening report by saying that all of its sales reps will receive 15 hours of training before launch. The clock is ticking.

[MORE: 8 Windows 8 Annoyances and How to Fix Them]

3. Not enough apps
At last count there were nearly 3,500 apps in the Windows Store. And while there are a handful of compelling options so far, there are a lot more holes in Microsoft?s lineup than I would expect at this late stage. Where is Facebook? Twitter? YouTube? Dropbox? Angry Birds??

The good news: Microsoft will unveil plenty of high-profile apps either at the launch of its OS or shortly thereafter, hopefully filling in a fair number of these holes. But I still have serious concerns about the breadth of options that will be available. After all, Apple has 250,000 apps just for the iPad, thanks to its huge head start.

Microsoft also needs to prove that Windows 8 is a viable gaming platform and not just rest on the Xbox name, as it has done with Windows Phone. Shoppers need to see console-quality eye candy along with casual fare. I?m encouraged by the fact that the Unreal Engine III has been ported to Windows 8, however, which should help lead to Infinity Blade-style titles in the Windows Store. Titles based on the Unity engine will come after launch.

[MORE: Top 20 Windows 8 Apps]

4. Crappy touchpads
Sure, Windows 8 works best with touch, but the sweet spot for most shoppers right now is $500 clamshell designs that rely on touchpads. Based on previous experience, I?m very worried that these pointing devices won?t deliver the smooth gesture support that will add up to a good user experience. On a lot of pre-production samples I?ve tried the touchpad didn?t always respond when I swiped in from the left to switch apps. And most of them didn?t support the gesture to move in from the left and quickly back to the right to see all of your open apps.

If notebook vendors can?t make pinch-to- zoom work well or two-finger scrolling, they?ll have an even harder time getting Windows 8 gestures to work reliably. I?m really hoping Synaptics, Microsoft and OEMs get it right, but it will probably take a while.

[MORE: Crappy Touchpads Could Kill the Ultrabook]

5. Macs on the rise
Microsoft shouldn?t just be concerned about the iPad and the rumored "iPad Mini." It should take note that Apple is now No. 1 in notebook sales in the U.S. The 13-inch MacBook Pro is consistently the top seller at retail, and all you need to do is peek inside any coffee shop to see a sea of MacBook Airs. I?ve said this before, but the Mac's?OS X?Mountain Lion could prove more attractive than Windows 8?to those looking for a more traditional operating system this holiday, especially for those who own other Apple devices and like the idea of having iCloud keeping everything in sync.

[MORE:?10 Reasons to Drop Windows for Mountain Lion]

Bottom line
Microsoft is reportedly spending $1.5 billion to launch and promote Windows 8, and the company has never been under more pressure to make sure that shoppers get the message. But what is that message? Is it that you can have your cake and eat it too with a Windows 8 PC that runs mobile and ?legacy? apps? That you can get all-day battery life, iPad-like portability and Office productivity with a Windows RT device? It?s actually all of the above, which is a big part of the challenge.

Although Microsoft?having a hero device like the Surface tablet?helps, Windows 8 will succeed or fail not based on how well the Surface fares. Just as with every other Windows launch, Microsoft will once again rely on an ecosystem of app developers and hardware?makers to make its software sing. All of the above five obstacles are not insurmountable, but they?re very real.

Researching Auto Responders | CoolHQ

If you are in the Internet marketing business or if you run a business online, an autoresponder can make a world of difference. They can handle a majority of your technical support questions and informational requests, by sending out automated messages to interested customers. When they get an email, they will respond instantly with a preset message. This can save you quite a bit of time- especially if you get a lot of emails on a daily basis.

Out there on the Internet, there are many autoresponders to choose from. They are classified into three main types ? locally hosted, remote hosted and desktop hosted. Each type has pros and cons, depending on your needs. Locally and desktop hosted programs will give you complete control over the program, as you run them through your own server or website. Remote hosted on the other hand, is ran through a third party service provider. Remote programs cost you a monthly fee, while desktop and locally hosted programs cost one fee ? then you have complete ownership of the program.

Before you decide to purchase an autoresponder, you should always compare and see what each one has to offer. If you are interested in running one from your server or website, then you?ll need to look at desktop and locally hosted autoresponders. There are free programs available online, although they will normally come with strings attached, such as ads in your emails. This can be a bad thing, as ads in your email will give customers the wrong impression. www.Automatic-Responder.com is a great service that also offers a free version for up to 250 subscribers and no advertisements.

When you purchase one of these types of autoresponder programs, you should always research and find out all that you can. There are many programs out there that you can buy, many of which will offer you great features at a great price. Buying your program is the way to go, especially if you have an image to uphold. Once you have found a program and buy it, it will be yours for as long as you decide to use it.

If you are looking towards a remotely hosted autoresponder, you?ll need to research for the best prices and service, this is a must when shopping around. You?ll be dealing with a company who has control over the address of the autoresponder, meaning that your domain name won?t appear in the emails you send using the autoresponder. This can be good for some, although many prefer to have their name in their emails.

When it all comes down to it, you should always research an autoresponder before you decide to make a purchase or use a free program. There are several out there to choose from, although some are far superior to others. If you take the time and research what each one has to offer you and how much it will cost you ? you?ll end up with an autoresponder that will prove to be more than worth the cost.

Venture funding declines in 3Q

(AP) ? A new study says funding for startups declined 12 percent in the July-September period as venture capitalists spent less money on fewer deals.

A report out Friday says startup investments totaled $6.49 billion in the third quarter. That's down from $7.34 billion a year earlier, a period that preceded a slew of high-profile initial public offerings from Facebook Inc. and others. Excitement about the IPOs helped drum up excitement about other up-and-coming startups among venture capitalists.

There were 890 deals completed during the quarter, down 10 percent from 992 a year earlier. Companies in software, biotech and information technology received the most money, with software far outpacing the others.

The quarterly MoneyTree study was conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers and the National Venture Capital Association based on data from Thomson Reuters.

(AP) ? The British hospital treating a 15-year-old Pakistani girl shot in the head by the Taliban raised hopes for her recovery Friday when doctors said she was able to stand with some help and to write.

Malala Yousufzai appeared with her eyes open and alert as she lay in a hospital bed, in the first photographs released by the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham since she arrived from Pakistan on Monday.

It was a series of positive developments since the shooting, which was a brazen bid by the Taliban to silence the girl, who has been an outspoken advocate for girls' right to education.

Still, doctors said she shows signs of infection and faces a long, difficult recovery with uncertain prospects.

"She is not out of the woods yet," hospital medical director Dr. Dave Rosser said. "Having said that, she's doing very well. In fact, she was standing with some help for the first time this morning when I went in to see her."

He said Malala had agreed to the release of medical information and photos, and wants to thank people throughout the world for their interest and support in the difficult days since she was gunned down in Pakistan.

He said her bullet wound has become infected.

A large bruise beneath her left eye could be seen in the photo released Friday, showing Malala in her hospital bed with a toy bear. The upbeat report galvanized Malala's many backers, who had feared the worst.

Bakhtawar Bhutto Zardari, daughter of the late Pakistani leader Benazir Bhutto, described Malala's progress as wondrous.

"Miracles of today: Malala able to stand," she tweeted.

Canadian writer and journalist Irshad Manji celebrated the girl's progress on Twitter: "So listen up world; Miracle Malala has more 2 say."

Brain injury experts stressed, however, that she is at the start of what will be a long process.

Dr. Jaime Levine, medical director of brain injury rehabilitation at New York University's Rusk Rehabilitation unit in Manhattan, said Malala's ability to stand with assistance and move her arms was a "wonderful sign," but the doctor said it was too soon to say whether she would make a complete recovery.

"For some, recovery from a brain injury is a lifelong process," Levine said. "Some people are left with limitations for the rest of their lives. We speak about recovery in terms of goals and function. For a 15-year-old girl attending school with the promise of her whole life in front of her, goals for her are to finish school and to have a job one day and to have a family. ... But we're not talking about those goals yet. We're talking about short-term goals."

Malala has come to be a symbol for a girl's right to education.

At the age of 11, she began writing a blog under a pseudonym for the BBC about life under the Taliban in the Swat Valley. After the military ousted the militants in 2009, she began publicly speaking out about the need for girls' education. She appeared frequently in the media and was given one of the country's highest civilian honors for her bravery.

Malala was shot and critically wounded on Oct. 9 as she headed home from school in the northwest Swat Valley. The Taliban said they targeted Malala, a fierce advocate for girls' education, because she promoted "Western thinking" and was critical of the militant group.

The Taliban attack was widely condemned.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the shooting as a "heinous and cowardly act," and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the "attack reminds us of the challenges that girls face, whether it is poverty or marginalization or even violence just for speaking out for their basic rights."

Malala was flown from Pakistan to Birmingham on Monday for advanced medical treatment and for security protection. She was in a medically induced coma when she arrived, and regained consciousness on Tuesday, the hospital said.

The medical briefing Friday offered the first real indication of her progress. Earlier briefings were quite limited out of respect for the girl's privacy.

She is in Britain alone. Hospital officials have been in touch with her family in Pakistan.

Rosser said the girl "is communicating very freely, she is writing" but not speaking because she has a tracheotomy tube in her throat.

"We have no reason to believe that she would not be able to talk once this tube is out, which it may be in the next few days," Rosser said.

Scans have revealed some physical damage to her brain, but "at this stage we're not seeing any deficit in terms of function," Rosser said.

"She seems able to understand. She's got motor control, she's able to write.

"Whether there's any subtle intellectual or memory deficits down the line is too early to say," he added.

"It is possible she will make a smooth recovery, but it is impossible to tell I'm afraid."

Malala needs time to recover her strength before surgery to reconstruct her skull, either with her own bone or a titanium plate, the hospital said in a briefing note. That could be weeks or months in the future.

The bullet, which was removed by surgeons in Pakistan, hit Malala's left brow. It traveled beneath the skin and into the neck, damaging soft tissue at the base of the jaw and base of the neck, the note said.

"There is every sign that she understands why she's here," Rosser said.

"It's a very difficult position for her, clearly, because she has gone from being on a school bus and the next thing she will be consciously aware of is being in a strange hospital in a different country."

Officials in the Swat Valley originally said Malala?was 14 years old but officials at her school confirmed that her birthday was July 12, 1997, making her 15, as the U.S. public broadcaster NPR reported earlier.
