GTX BLOG: December 3rd, 1992 - the first SMS was sent | Mobile ...

Day one of GTX?s daily blog on the history of SMS gets underway.

A new series of daily blog posts begins today on Mobile Entertainment. As the 20th anniversary of the very first SMS message approaches, GTX Messaging walks us through the history of SMS?

On December 3rd, 1992, a 22-year-old test engineer sent what would become a historical message when he typed ?Merry Christmas? on his desktop computer and sent it to a friend?s cellphone ? the first known SMS message. At the time, Neil Papworth and colleagues were working on new communications technologies and thought SMS was a clever internal communications solution. Papworth has since said ?it didn?t seem like a big deal? on the day, but 19 years and 346 days later, texting has become a worldwide phenomenon.
